Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Bento fans all over the world know about Bento&co. Based in Kyoto, Japan, Bento&co sells only bento boxes and related products, and their ever-evolving catalog features items reflecting the best of Japanese bento box design, from cute to modern-minimalist to traditional. It’s also one of the few online stores catering to the international market that carries real Japanese wood and stainless steel bento boxes. All the products they carry are made in Japan, with the exception of some bento accessories that are designed in Japan and manufactured in China.

And, this is the item they’re giving away. It’s the impossibly cute Kokeshi Bento box! I understand that these have been flying off their shelves, so I’m really glad that we can give away one right here on JustBento. One lucky winner will win their choice of one of the Kokeshi Bento boxes pictured below.

bentoco-kokeshibento-all.jpg

A kokeshi is a traditional Japanese doll made of turned wood. They originated in the northern parts of Honshuu, the main island in Japan, but nowadays you see them sold everywhere in Japan. Japanese people love kokeshi; they’re so iconic that Nintendo took their inspiration for the Mii avatars used in Wii games from the kokeshi form.

The Kokeshi Bento box is made to look like a kokeshi doll, but is made of practical, microwave-safe plastic (remove the inner lids before microwaving). The box has three main parts: two stacking round layers for your regular bento food with leakproof lids, plus a small bowl that can be used for soup, fruit, cereal, and so on. (Note that the bowl is not water-tight; the idea is to bring along a packet of instant soup or your own vegetable soup concentrate, and to add hot water in the bowl with the soup mix when you’re ready to eat.) The bowl inverts on top of the stack to form the head of each kokeshi character, and a bento band is included to hold things together.

The total capacity of the box is 640ml - 200ml for each stacking tier, and 240ml for the bowl. It’s suitable for adults with small appetites.

Onigiri with home made gomashio! (your recipe of course)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I'm not sure yet what my favorite is. I am still in the trying things out stage.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite bento food for lunch is combination between fresh veggies, rice, and protein in it. Kind of look like this: http://www.slashfood.com/2008/07/02/feast-your-eyes-mr-bento-lunch/

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite lunch is leftover buckwheat noodles with tofu cabbage and peanut sauce. Nom Nom!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I don't have a favorite bento lunch since I'm new to the whole bento idea but I usually pack sandwiches. I'm looking forward to learning more about bentos and the lunch foods people pack in them.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I'm new to bento-making, but I would have to say that my favourite bento/lunch food includes a variety of food that are delicious, easy-to-prepare, and remind me of the elementary school kyuushoku lunches I had in Japan. Current favourite: saba no misoni. Yummy!

(PS: The Kokeshi Bento boxes are SOOOOO cute!)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My packed lunch is pretty much always a salad, but left-over risotto / other grain dishes are great, too.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love tiki masla over garbanzo beans, carrots, celery, and onion with a side of quinoa.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

In the part with a lid, I often mix yogurt and fruit. I love rice w/ furikake in the other part, and some protein - chicken or teriyaki tofu or eel. If I can get it I love roe (I work at home so can use things that need refrigeration).

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I think these bento boxes have to be the cutest I have seen yet!
My favourite bento is potato-salmon cakes with rice and a little chili-soy dressing (and some greens of course). And a little miso soup in winter.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I haven't gotten a chance to make any bento yet, though I hope to in the future! But my favorite lunch food has to be fruit cups. I adored them as a kid, and while now I just cut up fruits on my own, I still really love tasting the crisp freshness of fruit after a filling lunch.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite bento food is left over from a restaurant that my mother frequents during the work week - Kung pao tofu. I freeze the portion she buys for me, and when I want some, put it in the microwave, then in my bento while it cools down, make some protein (chicken, beef, pork...) and add some veggies or fruit (if I have them) and I have a complete meal that takes less time then the traditional speed bento.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

These are so cute! I think kinpira gobo is one of my favourites. Yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love noodle stir fry. I normally make them with leftovers. My favorite thing to do is to throw leftover chicken, vegetables, and sauce together quickly in the morning. Especially when I'm running low on time.

Bento Food

I'd have to say my favorite is tamagoyaki. For the first few years that I was vegetarian, my Mom was always nagging me about getting enough protein, so I'm always trying to make sure to include a protein source in my meals. Tamagoyaki are quick, easy, and pretty, plus they taste amazing!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I'm boring; I'd have to say rice is my favourite thing. You can put whatever with it, but the rice is what rounds it out. We eat so much rice in this house, I don't know why we're still buying it in the little plastic bags instead of the huge bags, or in bulk.
When I have the motivation I'll do a couple days' worth of onigiri for me and my husband for lunches. Our favourite filling so far is canned ham chunks, sauteed until dry and shredded with a little soy sauce, sort of like a ham soboro. A few of those and whatever veggies are in the fridge, and maybe a boiled egg.... that's a kickass lunch to me.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love to bring lemon slices and eat them raw. So good and sour!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Sandwiches. Sometimes very simple (peanut butter and banana) and sometimes very complicated (hummus, sprouts, spinach, tomato, etc, etc).

Also, as a leftovers bento, I love some variation of your recipe for eggplant in dengaku sauce (http://www.justhungry.com/nasu-no-miso-dengaku-japanese-slow-roasted-egg...) on rice.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Of all the things I've made for my bento boxes from this site, my favorite is the Vegan iri dofu. It's so flavorful, yummy with rice, and I can add whatever fresh veggis I have with the tofu. Sadly the rest of my family is not much of a fan of tofu, but that just means more for me :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love inarizushi! <3

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite bento food is gyoza with stir-fried veggies. It's so easy to make in the morning. I put the gyoza in one pan while stir-frying the pre-cut veggies in another. Packed with some sauce for the gyoza and veggies and it's an awesome lunch for the day. X3

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Those are so cute. I'm a fan of various breaded chicken goodies. Easy to cook and store too.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

When I was regularly making bentos, I loved making BBQ pork onigiri.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Its between the classic Sausage octopus or chocolate mousse in a dessert bento. I ate the mouse on oyster crackers because i'm odd. but it worked really well. No pictures sorry.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

These bento boxes are so cute! I love tomagoyaki with sliced green onions or spinach rolled up inside. I use your recipe, it is delicious! I also make a tuna sushi. One can of tuna packed in water is cooked in 1 Tb of rice vinegar, 1 Tb or soy sauce, and 1 Tb of sugar. It is sweet and salty.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

my favorite bento food has to be Gyoza! Hands down. There are so many different kinds, and they're so easy to prepare and pack, I just love em!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Anything in a bento is fun, but my favorite is baby corns and baby carrots!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

These are really cute, and a style I haven't seen before. I like that the inner lid on the top tier is domed, rather than flat.

Hmm, favorite bento food...probably yogurt, with frozen chunks of fruit to keep it cold. A bit of the yogurt will freeze onto the fruit this way, which is very nice. :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love to put tamago in my bentos, it's so tasty and a good source of protein :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

these are so cute, kawai! perfect for having chazuke at the office, or soup now that my braces are on ;< but love this idea! thanks for sharing!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love those kokeshi's!!! Super cute.
My latest favorite lunch is vegetarian Bibimbap with miso soup from a local Korean Deli. Yummy and healthy!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

The Kokeshi bento! I was just thinking the other day that I need to save up some money to get one.

My favorite bento food (besides fresh veggies) is most definitely the rice burger idea that I learned from here at justbento.com. I'm all about usability and versatility, and you can make just about anything into a patty or a mixture to put in between two "buns".

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Those are such beautiful bentos, I really hope I win one, I love your blog, I learn so much!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite bento food is definitely tomagoyaki (using your recipe, Maki-san!). I've found that they are super easy to make and really really yummy^____^ I usually amaze my family and friends when I make tomagoyaki, because no one expects me to be able to use a pair of chopsticks with the dexterity needed to roll the tomagoyaki properly.

Probably my other favorite lunch food to have would be these little meatballs that my brother and I started making a year or so ago, from a mix of different recipes.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My favorite bento food is bulgogi + rice stuffed into yubu! So delicious <3

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love all types of rice :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Anything with rice, seaweed, and fillings! Sushi, kimbap, onigiri --I love them all!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love fresh rolls made with red leaf lettuce, quinoa, shredded carrot, pumpkin seeds and edemame with a peanut-ginger dressing.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

I love mozzarella and tomato and basil salad in my bento!

These are too cute!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

tonkatsu is sooo good.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Anything anyone else packs for me, is my favorite! If I am packing, then my recent favorite would be little musubis with spam (Hawaiian style) or hot dog sushi (kid style).

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

My absoloute favorite is a recipie from a cookbook my brother-in-law bought me for my birthday. The cookbook is Lets Cook Japanese Food! Everyday Recipes for Home Cooking by Amy Kaneko. And the recipie I love best is listed as Toriniku Dango no Amasu An - Chicken Meatballs with Sweet Vinegar Glaze.

Its amazingly good bolth piping hot and at room temperature. The meatballs even keep well frozen though the glaze can get a bit gummy. I usualy just make up large batches of the meatballs and do the glaze fresh and let it cool just before I pack the bento.

The cookbook is decent, filled with easy Japanese food with a comfort food kind of feel to it. My only complaint is she assumes that certain Japanese ingredients wont be available and writes the substitution into the recipies without giving instructions for what to do when those ingredients are available.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Buffalo brat roll-ups!

I'm in ! :-)

Those are too too cute ! they would be great for my daughter's bentos !! :-))
I love tofu, stir fried veggies and rice. That's my favourite ! :-))

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Most times I just bring leftovers or fresh fruit in my bento box, but when I have a little extra time, I love to make a Mexican salad: sliced cucumber, sliced jícama, and for color, grated carrot (most times I just use a vegetable peeler). Season with lime juice and chili powder.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from From Bento&co

Potato Koroke is, possibly, my overall favorite. However, at the moment I'm in love with the 'Kinpira Rice Burger' posted on Just Bento!!! After reading it I had to try it and it is soooo tasty. Thank you for the creative recipe!!!
