Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Bento fans all over the world know about Bento&co. Based in Kyoto, Japan, Bento&co sells only bento boxes and related products, and their ever-evolving catalog features items reflecting the best of Japanese bento box design, from cute to modern-minimalist to traditional. It’s also one of the few online stores catering to the international market that carries real Japanese wood and stainless steel bento boxes. All the products they carry are made in Japan, with the exception of some bento accessories that are designed in Japan and manufactured in China.

And, this is the item they’re giving away. It’s the impossibly cute Kokeshi Bento box! I understand that these have been flying off their shelves, so I’m really glad that we can give away one right here on JustBento. One lucky winner will win their choice of one of the Kokeshi Bento boxes pictured below.

bentoco-kokeshibento-all.jpg

A kokeshi is a traditional Japanese doll made of turned wood. They originated in the northern parts of Honshuu, the main island in Japan, but nowadays you see them sold everywhere in Japan. Japanese people love kokeshi; they’re so iconic that Nintendo took their inspiration for the Mii avatars used in Wii games from the kokeshi form.

The Kokeshi Bento box is made to look like a kokeshi doll, but is made of practical, microwave-safe plastic (remove the inner lids before microwaving). The box has three main parts: two stacking round layers for your regular bento food with leakproof lids, plus a small bowl that can be used for soup, fruit, cereal, and so on. (Note that the bowl is not water-tight; the idea is to bring along a packet of instant soup or your own vegetable soup concentrate, and to add hot water in the bowl with the soup mix when you’re ready to eat.) The bowl inverts on top of the stack to form the head of each kokeshi character, and a bento band is included to hold things together.

The total capacity of the box is 640ml - 200ml for each stacking tier, and 240ml for the bowl. It’s suitable for adults with small appetites.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Cute bento boxes, I've never seen those before.
My favorite bento food is plain rice. I use sesame furikake sometimes, but Mr Yoshida's sauce is the best accompaniment for the rice. I originally ate it with sticky rice (yum!), but switched to plain steamed rice because it is a little bit healthier.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love home-made sau mai (or siu mai) salmon rice and chicken with shiitake, red pepper and soy sauce. And miso soup. Yummy!!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

When I have the time to do it, I LOVE making Tamago.
When I'm using leftovers, I have a salmon rice ball recipe that I enjoy.( http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Salmon-and-Rice-Balls/Detail.aspx ) and a spicy cucumber salad. Gives me the vegetables that I like to have.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I like having fried rice with egg and some fruit to clean the pallet when I am done. It's always so nice to have a good lunch during a stressful day :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

It's not very traditional, but I love pasta salad with tuna and peas. It's got the carbs and protein that I need!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Onigiri, I just love onigiri! And your recipe on carrot/forgotten vegetable kinpira.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

We started experimenting with bento luches during the last school year and my kids already requested california rolls and a sweet beef and egg donburri for thier first week back. My husband loves sushi, me not so much but I can roll it pretty well.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My all-time favorite bento box lunch would be the classic steamed rice with a sprinkling of sesame seeds, homemade chicken teriyaki, some edamame, and a bunch of strawberries. It's visually appealing with all the colors and very satifying in the tummy. I love it, and my kids love it for their school lunch, too.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I like a healthy lunch; usually turkey or chicken with humus on a wheat warp; veggies and fruit!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

It is so hard to pick just one thing, but right now brown rice and chicken sound good for a bento.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Kiri sandwiches and carrot & cucumber sticks for my 4 year old

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

No question: tamagoyaki, it's in almost every Bento we make.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love mini frittatas you make in mini muffin tins. Just mix up some eggs and add chives, bits of ham or canadian bacon, cheese, whatever you like. Pour it into mini muffin tins and bake.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food has got to be seared tuna or salmon steaks shredded into some rice with sesame seeds scattered in there. It has to be my favorite of all time. :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

those are seriously cute, the designers hit on a lovely idea there. :)

i like tamagoyaki, teriyaki chicken, rice balls, and dumplings filled with leftovers (usually chicken korma) http://lunchinabox.net/2008/03/01/leftover-remake-curry-gyoza/ although I can never get them to look as pretty as that site's photos. the in-law's garden provides a lot of vegetables, so we eat whatever is in season.

I love making tiny Okonomiyaki for my bento boxes. I use the recipe from The Manga Cookbook by Yoko Ishihara (page 102 - 103) except I add bacon. They taste exactly like the ones I used to eat in Osaka!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento item anything made from satsumaimo. I love daigakuimo which is deep fried satsumaimo which is then coated with a syrupy sauce and sprinkled with black sesame seeds. I also like chopping up steamed satsumaimo into small cubes and mixing it in with my rice. Ok I know you're supposed to talk about your favorite bento item but I also love love love homemade umeboshi. :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I personally love to bring soups for lunch. They keep our air conditioning down to freezing temperatures so a hot cup of soup is nice.

I love fresh veggies with hummus for lunch.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

One of my favorite lunch foods that would be good in a bento is noodles! Any kind, hot or cold; I love how you can do so much with them. Also, hummus & sugar snap peas are my latest addiction.

I love kara-age. You can see the recipe on this page (in french) : http://a-vos-baguettes.blogspot.com/2010/05/elements-pour-bento-ou-pour-...

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Cherry tomato and lettuce salad with side vinaigrette (so the lettuce won't get mushy!), fried rice with sesame and caned tuna with soy sauce, and 2-egg creamy omelette with bacon. Very fast to prepare and very very tasty.

You can easily find many kind of vinaigrette recipes on google!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I like having katsudon bento with miso soup =)
And a salade of melon, watermelon ~

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Onigiri! My host mom used to make them but I liked the ones filled with negitoro from the conbini the best.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite is fresh veggies and hummus. Not very traditional, but so simple to pack and yummy to eat.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Onigri made by grandma. Whenever she'd see me growing up she'd always have some made for me. Brings a smile to my face just thinking about it. Always made with us love. ^.^

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love a bento with 3-4 onigiri with different fillings, usually left-overs, a japanese omelete sliced up, and some fruit salad. Perfect and simple!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento is probably steamed white rice with sake furikake and mini hamburger patties with egg, I think my mom made this most often for me.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I really like having fresh, seasonal (when possible) vegetables and fruit in my bentos. It makes me feel healthy, and it's also generally delicious!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite is rice with sesame seeds. Sometimes I put a bit of soy sauce too.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

For my daughter, the favorites are fresh fruit and veggies along with little crackers and cheese cut with cookie cutters. For me it's whatever leftovers I can easily transport.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My life would be better if I had one of these.

I'm really bad about bringing food from home for lunch, but I would be very happy with a simple bento of rice and maybe some kind of chicken teriyaki. Oh, and I guess vegetables. Maybe.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Hi,

I like to have tamagoyaki and onigiri in my bentos because they are easy to make and versatile.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Like a lot of other people I would have to say I love onigiri the best for my bentos. There is just so much you can do with them. Though my favorite is toasted in a bit of sesame oil. Yum!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

As a mom with six children, I'm still puzzling over the interest in bento boxes... I think I've been doing Kyaraben (character) bento in good ol' American brown bag lunches all these years w/o realizing it LOL :D ...what an additional wow response if I won one of these cutesie bento boxes...for the back-to-school readers with younger children, sushi with the nori on the outside and decorated to look like piggies using hot dog pieces is a nice combo of Japanese artistry plus Yankee frugal and quick-to-make practicality :).

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite lunch food is grilled cheese with tomato soup :D

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I like making bento for my son with colorful veggies and dip.
