Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Bento fans all over the world know about Bento&co. Based in Kyoto, Japan, Bento&co sells only bento boxes and related products, and their ever-evolving catalog features items reflecting the best of Japanese bento box design, from cute to modern-minimalist to traditional. It’s also one of the few online stores catering to the international market that carries real Japanese wood and stainless steel bento boxes. All the products they carry are made in Japan, with the exception of some bento accessories that are designed in Japan and manufactured in China.

And, this is the item they’re giving away. It’s the impossibly cute Kokeshi Bento box! I understand that these have been flying off their shelves, so I’m really glad that we can give away one right here on JustBento. One lucky winner will win their choice of one of the Kokeshi Bento boxes pictured below.

A kokeshi is a traditional Japanese doll made of turned wood. They originated in the northern parts of Honshuu, the main island in Japan, but nowadays you see them sold everywhere in Japan. Japanese people love kokeshi; they’re so iconic that Nintendo took their inspiration for the Mii avatars used in Wii games from the kokeshi form.

The Kokeshi Bento box is made to look like a kokeshi doll, but is made of practical, microwave-safe plastic (remove the inner lids before microwaving). The box has three main parts: two stacking round layers for your regular bento food with leakproof lids, plus a small bowl that can be used for soup, fruit, cereal, and so on. (Note that the bowl is not water-tight; the idea is to bring along a packet of instant soup or your own vegetable soup concentrate, and to add hot water in the bowl with the soup mix when you’re ready to eat.) The bowl inverts on top of the stack to form the head of each kokeshi character, and a bento band is included to hold things together.

The total capacity of the box is 640ml - 200ml for each stacking tier, and 240ml for the bowl. It’s suitable for adults with small appetites.

My favorite bento food is hijiki.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I would definitely say tamagoyaki, so homey and delicious, with its the subtle sweet-salty taste! And miso soup! There is just something about those thick, slimey udon noodles that is simply irresistable! It drives me crazy with want! >w< <333

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

An oldie but a goodie - salmon onigiri with sesame :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Those boxes are too cute! My favorite filler is sesame-encrusted chicken (the recipe is from your site).

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I'm actually quite new to the whole bento culture so I haven't made that many bentos ^^;; but I remember one that my friends mom made for me in HS that I'll never forget. I'm not sure what it's called but it was green bell peppers stuffed with meat with rice and a small amount of salad!! It was so good; if I find a recipe I would love to try making it!!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I like soba noodles. They are so refreshing cold. And, the sauce you make to dip them in is really yummy. The kids also like how they are folded into figure 8's.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite is octopus wiener...simple and tasty..

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love to eat healthy bentos but my favorite part is finishing it to get to my dessert! A delicious homemade piece of mochi is delicious and satisfying.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My dad's spicy mung bean noodle dish! It's a cold dish and taste better as a leftover because it's had more time to soak up all the spicy garlicy vinegary goodness so IF there's any leftover, I make sure to pack it in my lunch :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love the different furikake that flavor the origiri. I also love shaping vegetables into different flowers and shapes to decorate my bentos.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I think no box lunch (bento or otherwise) is truly complete without pickles. Cornishons being my particularly favorite.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food is tuna stuffed onigiri.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food so far is a green bean salad or blueberries I can eat with a small chunk of cheddar (the flavors combine gloriously)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Lately my bento has been containing curry and rice (cheap and filling) but one of my favorite things at other times has always been the umeboshi. I love those things. When I'm in a pinch and have to get something from the conbini, I'm never sure which onigiri to go for - ume or the natto roll. haha

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite bento food is fried leeks with meat patties.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love:
1. onigiri balls with salmon in the middle and mixed nori and tamago rice spice
2. fresh crunchy veggies with dip
3. quinoa salad with diced fresh veggies, roasted chicken and lime vinaigrette
YUM!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite is whatever lets me use up leftovers from dinner the previous night! Chicken and rice with fresh sliced green onions and almonds is my favorite. Cherry tomatoes fresh from the garden is a current favorite for our family!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I'm new to your blog and just got back from Japan where I was visiting my son who is teaching in Kochi Prefecture. I had the most amazing time while there and the people I met were so warm friendly and generous. I loved the food and bought a bento box while there even though I work from home. I feel like making myself lunch and putting it in the bento box anyway after reading your blog and wanting to try all the recipes. I was afraid before I went to Japan that i wouldn't like any of the food but really loved most everything I ate. I am inspired to try my hand at Japanese cuisine now. Thanks for such a great site!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I haven't actually tried benoing yet, still mastering the courage for the task, but I really need protein for lunch to keep me going. It can be chicken, good cheese or Falafel - and always with fresh vegetables on the side.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Probably have to be onigiri! Otherwise I'm a PB&J type!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Karaage.. >.<

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento recipe would be hijiki! Thanks.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Fusilli al pesto! I just cannot wait till lunch time!
Fusilli ans steamed French beans tossed with delicious home made pesto (basel, garlic clove, pine nuts, parmiggiano reggiano- or pecorino cheese, and super healthy olive oil). The thought of it makes me hungry even for breakfast!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

For some reason, I really like cold chicken karaage in my bento. My mom often put it in my bentos.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I'm very new in bento's world, but onigiris fascinate me!
I like chesse onigiri with onion and pepper confit! I love also onigiri boxes, I would lunch out everyday only to carry them :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Tamagoyaki. Simple but tasty^^

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favourite bento food is leftovers! (It's easy and I'm lazy...)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

This have to be the cutest bento boxes I have ever seen! My favorite bento box recipe would have to be curry. Japanese curry especially with chicken and broccoli. It's awesome to have at lunch, and if you have a two tier or three tier you can have a separate side of fruit! The best meal ever, no doubt.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I generally use leftovers from the day before, but when I prepare food especially for a bento, I have a soft spot for Japanese classics such as tamagoyaki and onigiri (when I've cooked a large quantity of rice in the cooker), as well as your very own tuna and tofu mini-burger recipe!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

It's very hard to pick just one food. So I'll share with what I've just had for lunch. It was quite common miso soup, except that I've used leftover shiitake stock mixed with sobayu and it turned surprisingly sweet-scented and tasty :)

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

a light sandiwich with cucumber for summer freshness, plus a few summer fruits like cherries or grapes. simple, easy and variety

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My fave bento food would be onigiri. Despite being Italian, I'm not that fond of pasta (I don't hate it, mind you; it's just that there are so many things I like better), so rice is my foavorite carb source. Yet rice salad gets boring after a while... onligiri were such a fun discovery!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

our favorite bento lunch is tuna onigiri + cucumber with yogurt dressing , panacotta and raspberry coulis for dessert.. yummy!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite bento food are sandwiches & fruits.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

This would be great for my daughter

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite lunch food is plain yogurt with fresh fruit and granola.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Hard choice but for me, my favourite obento is onigiri with some spicy stir fry vegetables and/or some meat or shiozake. Simple, easy and satisfying.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I don't really know why, but i love to put boiled eggs in my bento. Especially shoyu tamago. I can eat them everyday!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

My favorite would have to be carrot kinpira. Its so flavorful and it makes the whole bento smell delicious~!

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Anything that the hubby has made enough of to take leftovers the next day! Steak sandwiches, chicken & rice, tacos

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I'm just starting with bento making but my favorite lunch equivalent, that I take to work, is stir-fried vegetables (carrots, leek, onions etc.) and chicken, rice and fresh tomatoes. It's quick and easy to make in the morning.

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

I love packing kimbap or Korean rice rolls for lunch. I can pretty much put any ingredient on it including leftovers from the day before. So easy (and quick) to make plus it's really convenient to pack.
Like this Tuna Kimbap

Re: Back To School Week Giveaway from Bento&co

Fresh salads with tomatoes, carrots, bell peppers, red onions, feta cheese, and homemade dressing. So refreshing, healthy, easy, yummy!
