Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from JustBento

Comments are now closed. Thank you for all of your terrific responses! The winner of the giveaway will be announced next week.

Dear JustBento readers, I need your help! I’m trying to put together a list of the most popular recipes here on JustBento. I can go by access count and all that, but I thought it would be more interesting if you told me what you like.

So, here’s the deal. Just leave a comment here stating the following:

  1. Your name (Your full name is not necessary, just a name or nickname so I can identify you)
  2. Your general geographic location in the world
  3. Up to 3 favorite recipes from the site, and why you like them. Please give me the full name or the link, since some recipes have very similar names.

And that is it! One commenter picked at random will receive a signed copy of The Just Bento Cookbook, plus an additional goodie to be disclosed later.

Just a few rules and all that:

  • Only one entry/comment per person please. If you leave more than one (unless it’s due to a glitch in the commenting system) I’ll have to disqualify you.
  • Perhaps it’s a bit too obvious but…only write in recipes that are actually on the site. I’ll allow JustHungry recipes too. But if you just list any old recipe, you’re probably confused…and will be ineligible for the drawing.
  • The prize can be shipped worldwide.
  • Deadline for entry: March 8, 2013 at 23:59:59 CET.

And that’s it! I’m looking forward to reading your comments!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

My #1 favorite is definitely your Japanese hambaaga recipe. I've made it both with and without tofu and loved each version.

#2 is the eggplant-beef-miso recipe published in the Japan Times.

#3 is salted salmon.

Other favorites include: very easy marinated chicken skewers; miso chicken; your husband's updated nikujaga; forgotten vegetable kinpira; walnut miso paste for cooked vegetables; braised spicy daikon radish and carrot; your mother's glazed sardines; Hokkaido-style corn, chicken, and cabbage soup with miso; takenoko miso pottage.

I've prepared all of these dishes at least twice (the top three, more times than I can count) and really enjoyed all of them! Some of them - like forgotten vegetable kinpira - are part of my regular recipe rotation, and my boyfriend repeatedly requests that I made hambaaga.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi Maki, I'm from Texas and I really like your carrot furikake. It has ingredients that were easy for me to get and it turned out really tasty!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hello!

I'm in Edmonton, AB Canada

I just bought your book a few months ago and my husband has commented that his lunches have vastly improved! I am hoping to win a book to give to my sister-in-law ^_^

I like the sweet and sour cucumber and wakame pickles: http://justhungry.com/sweet-and-sour-cucumber-and-wakame-pickles

I also like the spring rolls, Japanese style: http://justhungry.com/spring-rolls-harumaki-japanese-style

I also like the tutorial/recipe for the sushi roll bento: http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/sushi-roll-bento-m...

I was skeptical about the cooked salmon in mayo sushi that was in your book but was really surprised at how tasty it was! Even my 2.5 year-old son enjoyed it :)

Thank you!!

Joann from Vancouver, Canada. It's hard to pick just three, but I'd have to say my favorite recipes are the following:

1) Vegan Japanese potato salad - I just love potato salad in general and I like the crunchiness of the cucumbers in this recipe.
2) Double satoimo (taro root) with miso, sesame and honey - I don't know too many good satoimo recipes, but I like this one!
3) Bite-size chicken teriyaki for bento boxes - I always love good teriyaki chicken in my bento.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I live in Ontario, Canada, and I love all the vegetarian/vegan recipes here, and tips on making some meat ones into vegetarian dishes.

My favourite recipes are:
Parsnip Kinpira http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-sides/bento-filler-parsn...

Two colour Namasu http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/two-color-namasu-make-ahead-daiko...

And finally, Onigiri http://justhungry.com/2003/12/obento.html

I eat these three foods almost daily. Since I found this site, I've had to buy carrots much more frequently! The Namasu looks very pretty made with yellow or red carrots, and I love onigiri with umeboshi! I usually have friends over for lunch once a week, and I serve them a Japanese meal, always including the three recipes listed above.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

1 One Egg Tamagoyaki
because it's quick, easy, and uses eggs, which I always have in the fridge. An easy protein component.
2 Chicken Tsukune
because I can use one recipe to make dumplings, patties or small quenelles for the 'Tsukune Dumplings with Carrots' recipe. The dumplings and patties freeze well and I can vary the sauce I add to the patties at the end. I sometimes use the same recipe to stuff small mushrooms. I guess versatility is the key here.
('Tuna Tofu Miso Mini Burgers' were a close second to the Tsukune because they are a store cupboard recipe and also freeze well.)
3 Easy Sugarfree Carrot Kinpira
because it is quick and easy and carrots are a vegetable I almost always have on hand. I can also use other vegetables such as parsnip as you suggest. It lasts a few days in the fridge or freezes well.
('Quick and Spicy Chinese Cabbage Tsukemono' was a contender here but I need to remember to buy cabbage.)

It was cruel to limit me to only three favorites because there are so many recipes I love and make often.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi Maki, this is Milica, from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

I've been bentoing on and off for about two years, since I discovered your site. In the beginning, I was not a vegetarian, so I made many of your meat recipes, like chicken karaage, balsamic sesame chicken, and beef and vegetable rolls regularly. I also made a ton of your carrot and sesame furikake, and still do. There was also a point in time where every morning I would make a one egg tamagoyaki to tuck in my bento.

Now I still like your mediterranean green vegan burgers, inarizushi, and other recipes - I still make a lot of the quick pickles from your cookbook, but I like to use your site for inspiration as well. I made your version of a spanish tortilla and loved it, and just recently I used some leftover pasta and chickpea salad in a frittata for my bento. Reading this website really introduced me into cooking, as well as repurposing, and eating balanced, nutritious meals.

All because I really hated soggy sandwiches, ahaha.

Cheers!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Christoph from Germany here. My favorite (vegetarian) recipes are:

- Spinach with sesame sauce (hourensou no gomaae) (with tahini)
- Tofu Soboro (iridofu)
- Carrot and Gobo Kinpira

Thanks for these great recipes!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I have to say that the simplest are my favorites: Blanched Spinach with sesame and Budo Mame. I love these because when I was just out of college, I would get bentos for lunch from a Japanese grocery store near where I worked and I would always have spinach. And I traveled in France for awhile when I was a poor student and when my boyfriend and I finally found a Japanese restaurant (we were both obsessed with Japanese food), they served Budo Mame as a side dish with the meal and it was heaven after eating bread and cheese for a week. Food memories are the best. Thanks for helping me make them real again!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I'm Sai in Illinois, USA! My favorite recipes are these:

Chicken Karaage (http://justhungry.com/2004/04/karaage_japanes.html) - I love love LOVE this. It's spoiled me for many kinds of fried chicken, because usually people don't bother with marinating the chicken like you do. It makes such a big difference!

Spicy Lentil Snacks with Sesame Seeds (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/spicy-lentil-snack...) - I actually burned my eyeball when I made this, because I had the oil too hot! But after I tried one of these lentil balls, I decided it was worth it. They didn't even last one day in my house, hahah.

Cucumber and Nashi marinated salad (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-sides/cucumber-and-nashi...) - I like how this is both a little spicy and sweet, so perfect for summer.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I live in Sweden and started with bentos in 2009, but I have to admit the latest 10 months or so have I not done bentos on a regular basis. The courses inspire me to start again, which is just perfect :D
I liked the folowing the most:

Bento sized mini cabbage rolls
http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/bento-sized-mini-cabbage-rolls
So cute, and sooooo tasty! I do a whole bunch of them and keep them frozen, so I can make quick bentos in the morning.

Lower-calorie, lower-cost, beef and bean sprout burgers
http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/lower-calorie-lowe...
Are there any better burgers? the bean sprout gives such a nice structure to else rahter plain burgers. I love them :D

Earl Grey Tea Muffins
http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/earl-grey-tea-muffins
Perfect as a snack although I make them with a green tea instead of the earl grey and I think it tastes wonderful. I tried making these with a gluten-free flour mix for my friend, and she loved them as well!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

My three favorite recipies
How to cook rice - since this is how I stumbled across this site
http://justhungry.com/2003/11/japanese_basics_1.html
I have used it many times since, as through this site I got more into experimenting with bento boxes.

The meatloaf recipie
http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/bento-sized-mini-meatloaves
Which introduced me through other peoples comments to making meatloaf balls in muffin tins - such a good idea!

The gyoza recipe
http://justhungry.com/2004/08/is_my_blog_burn.html
By the time I was looking for a recipie for gyoza I naturally started with just bento/hungry. I love the filling.

My favorite thing about these sites - recipies that are suitable for 1 person and the hints on how small portions can be frozen! - i love the cook book as well, im hoping for another one, but mainly Im glad you are feeling a bit better! :)

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi, I'm Andrea hailing from Central Florida. Long time reader of both your blogs and I love learning new ways to cook old standbys like rice and veg.

My favorite recipes of yours are some of the simple sauces or dressings for veggies. I am not in the groove of taking bento everyday, but even on the days lunch is a sandwich, I love being able to squeeze in a few simple veggie sides. Your recipes are just what I was looking for - easy to prep, can make in larger batches, and something different from the same old steamed veg with a little butter!

1. Carrot Rice: http://justbento.com/category/filed-under/vegetables?page=4
2. Two-color namasu: http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/two-color-namasu-make-ahead-daiko...
3. Walnut miso paste for cooked vegetables: http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/bento-filler-staple-walnut-miso-p...

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

My favorite recipes on this website are the Ongiri with Peas, Carrot Kinipura, and the Hambaagu. I've tried and liked many recipes on Just Bento, but these ones in particular made me think about food in a new way. I've made meatballs and hamburgers thousands of times. Nutmeg is a kitchen staple. I would NEVER have thought of using them together. These are the simple but unusual (to me) recipes that inspire me to try new combinations.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Completely forgot my location lol. I live in the Midwestern United States.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I live in the north east of England, UK

I love your edamame hummus, it's amazing unfortunately I don't have your book yet and the serious eats site only gave the ingredients in cups (another case of america thinking they're the centre of the universe), so i had to guess the amounts as apparently 1 cup weighs different amounts depending on who you ask!
The low-carb, gluten-free courgette and basil muffins are delicious and a perfect treat for my dad who has gone carb free for his health, and lost 4 stone already, i really hope you do more low-carb recipes.
And of course, the simple but tasty tamagoyaki is a classic and thanks to your clear instructions doable in an ordinary frying pan!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

We're in Texas and my kids, husband, and I love the Pan-fried crispy chicken. I use carrots for the root veggie in those. We use a vegetable co-op and frequently have carrots, so it's a great way to use those up. Plus, all four of us love it. Unfortunately, we never have leftovers! It doesn't seem to matter how much I make, it all gets gobbled up. My hubby always loves when I make it.

I also really like the Bite Size Teriyaki Chicken and the Miso Chicken. Guess I really like the bite size chicken recipes! ;-)

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Tamara from Maryland, USA

Okinawan taco rice
http://justbento.com/handbook/complete-bento-lists/guy-does-bento-no-2-t...
It's a different take a favorite food, tacos. I'm gluten free and can no longer eat the taco salad served at work. I always bought lunch on taco salad day. Corn tortillas crumbled too much with standard lunch packing. I took it home for my parents and sister to try after the first time I made it. I was very excited to have tacos back in my lunch.

Natto or tempeh fried rice

http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/natto-or-tempeh-fr...
I've made it with natto and tempeh. It's a nice filling lunch with the brown rice. I like the combination of the seaweed flavor with the fermented flavor from the natto or tempeh. It flavorful not greasy fried rice.

3 minute omelette
http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-side-dishes-and-space-fi...
I microwaved eggs for years and my sister hated the texture. By stirring part way through and adding butter, I now have a much better texture.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

My name is Nicole from Florida.
1) 1 egg tamogoyaki- Added a little extra soysauce for a little more salt. It's also quick adn easy to make
http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/1-egg-tamagoyaki-j...

2) walnut miso paste- It's not really a major food, but I love it as a topping for asparagus and broccoli. I like the nutty flavor. I added a little more than I should have, but I just loved it too much!
http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/bento-filler-staple-walnut-miso-p...

3) Homemade furikake- I love carrots and sesame seeds and never thought to combine them, but together they are wonderful!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

1) Beach
2) Georgia (USA)
3) Recipes from Just Bento (it was really hard to pick just 3):
a) Two-color namasu, a make-ahead daikon radish and carrot salad, because it's one of the yummiest veggie dishes I've ever had, so easy to make, and so healthy.

b) Japanese dry curry with soybeans or tempeh, because it's a great, quick vegetarian (but protein-rich) main course that freezes well.

c) Bite-size chicken teriyaki for bento boxes (made with atsuage tofu instead), because it was the best teriyaki I've ever had, yet much healthier, and so quick and inexpensive.

[d) bonus from Just Hungry: Spicy crunchy chick pea snack, because the recipe is so adaptable (I've made about 10 different kinds so far), and they're super-tasty, satisfy a crunchy/salty craving, and yet are healthy!]

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Zadi here, from the Southwest US. You're such an inspiration, Maki, and you've totally revolutionized my lunch-making! My favorite recipes:

1) Tamagoyaki. When I want to make bento but don't have any meat thawed? Tamagoyaki. Husband loves it, and asks for it regularly. So much tamagoyaki.

2) Kinpira. I usually stick with the classic carrot version (I have some in the bento sitting on my desk at the moment, for the record), but I do branch out into broccoli stems sometimes. Tasty.

3) Meat soboro. Soboro is my favorite 'stash' recipe, as I'll make a big batch of it, usually from ground lamb, and freeze it in little thawable batches. It's also my favorite onigiri filling!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I'm Madeline from Chicago - my three favorites have to be these.
Budo Mame/Sweet Salty Soybeans
http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/budo-mame-budoh-mame-sweet-salty-...
because they are one of my favorite side dishes and are so easy to make
Daigaku Imo/Japanese University Sweet Potatoes
http://justhungry.com/daigaku-imo-japanese-university-sweet-potatoes
because this was the first way I prepared the red sweet potatoes - I never knew they could be so delicious
Chicken Karaage/Japanese Fried Chicken
http://justhungry.com/2004/04/karaage_japanes.html
because it's one of my favorite dishes and one we almost always order when dining out.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi, my name is Mikki Barnes and I'm currently living in Lander, Wyoming.

My favorite recipes are:

Chicken-nanban

Onigiri

Chicken Karaage

In fact the most common combination at our house is little pieces of left-over chicken-nanban tucked in an onigiri for the next days lunch bento!.

~ Mikki

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hello, my name is Isabella Batten, I am from Miami Beach Florida and my favorite of your recipes are Bento 27 because it is tasty delicious, nutritious and vegan! It is quick to make and fills me up thanks to the fiber in the kidney beans. The addition of the rice makes the beans a complete protein which is fabulous. And it is low in calories! Bento 3 is another favorite, I'm eating guiltless pasta with a delicious twist to it and its low in calories and vegan. Last is bento 56 it is so yummy with the sweetness of the pees and the fact that it is once more vegan!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hello, I'm JP and I'm from Florida, I love both your sites and have gotten so much useful information from you, so thank you for that. My top three are:

1. 1 egg tamagoyaki (Japanese omelette) - Its just perfect to fill up the bento box and way easier than I thought it would be (even if i do break it sometimes)

2. Japanese Potato Salad - I never liked potato salad, but this is just amazing

3. Sweet pepper and onion confit - Super easy to make. And just so very tasty. I really like being able to use this recipe and add it to other things. I love how versatile it is.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Amanda - currently living in Tokyo, Japan, originally from Oklahoma, USA

My three favorites:
1. Bento No. 53: http://justbento.com/bento-no-53-sesame-beef-and-vegetable-bento
I love kinpira!! And bean sprouts are going to be a regular player in my bento, I think.

2. Bento No. 47: http://justbento.com/bento-no-47-panfried-chicken-mini-burger-bento
I love the cooked to death peppers side, I haven't tried the panfried chicken burger though actually. It is on my list of things to try!

3. And, I love these egg recipes because I have been wanting to learn how to make better/more interesting boiled eggs since I got here: http://www.justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/really-frugal-ramen-soup-eggs
http://www.justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/lazy-easy-tea-eggs

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I love this - Bento filler: Cherry tomato and leftover vegetable gratin cup!!! Made it so many times over with different vegetables & basically whatever was left from the cooking. ;) It's great for amateur cooks like me who do best at fuss-free snacks. :) BTW I just wanted to say that I love your site (just hungry too) & am really a big fan of yours. Keep cooking & writing. Be well. :) Love, Sabrina from S'pore.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi, I'm Hazwani from Adelaide, Australia. I've been following this website since last year and honestly, my eating habits have improved greatly, all thanks to your amazing bento ideas. :)

My top 3 recipes would be:

1. http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/carrot-rice-two-wa... (Carrot rice)
- eating rice has never been this good, I even eat this on its own sometimes. XD it's easy yet tasty.
2. http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/bento-sized-mini-cabbage-rolls (Mini cabbage rolls)
- I'm not a fan of cabbages, but thanks to this dish I've been eating cabbages and other veggies quite a lot lately. :) And sometimes I improvise your recipe by using minestrone soup instead on stock soup for a change of flavour. (and it's quite good too. ;D)
3. http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/tuna-tofu-miso-min... (Tuna tofu miso mini burgers)
- at first tuna and tofu combination was quite unheard of for me, but after I gave them a try, these burgers had become a must have in my everyday bento.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi my name is Cory from Lebanon NH and my favorites are 1.) http://justbento.com/bento-no-8-leftovers-bento-garlic-chive-blossom-fri... This Bento is very easy to make and tastes great, I make it a lot.
2.) http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/balsamic-sesame-ch... I love the taste of this chicken and it can be paired with just about any veggie or rice dish. 3.)http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-sides/cucumber-and-nashi-asian-pear-marinated-salad this is light, refreshing and healthy.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi, Nucifera from Austria here.
My most favourite recipe is definitely the Onigiri basics recipe(s), I have tried several of these variations and they are all great. My "guy" loves tuna-mayo, i do not have to make anything else for him.
http://justbento.com/handbook/bento-basics/onigiri-on-parade-guide-onigi...
This one might be a surprise: My second favourite recipe is the instant miso soup ball. It is a great addition to any of my lunches in winter, japanese or not, bento or not.
http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/make-your-own-instant-miso-soup-b...
The last one is also a basic recipe: (Cold) soba noodles. Since I first tried soba in the plane home from Japan I wanted to try it at home and with this recipe it even became one of the favourite dishes of my husband. The tips are great, I never had a "bad soba experience" when following them thoroughly.
http://justhungry.com/basics-cold-soba-noodles-dipping-sauce

I only make occassional bentos, i.e. I pack leftover food for lunch, and these recipes are perfect for this.

I already own the just bento cookbook so it is not necessary to include me in the giveaway, I just wanted to tell my side of the story.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

This is Jennifer L. Thank-you so much for your upbeat and inspiring website!!! I am relatively new to bento, and I am looking forward to making bento a healthy and fun part of my daily routine with the continued help from your website.
I am from the mountains of Virginia, USA.
I have tried and enjoyed:
chicken lollipops (because my family loves chicken wings!)
chana dal with fennel and almonds (I enjoy indian food and was surprised to see this! excellent!)
orange juice carrots (I think this is one of the best things about bento-- simple but also unusual-- and beautiful and healthy!)

I hope you are doing well, and I wish for continued success for you-- thanks again.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Sahara Rich from western US :) My 3 favorites are:

1. Broccoli Kinpira (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-side-dishes-and-space-fi...) because I love broccoli and hate throwing away the stems, and it's the perfect little side dish to whip up and use them. I may or may not eat it as a main dish sometimes too ;)
2. Japanese Basics: How to make Japanese-style plain rice and sushi rice (http://www.justhungry.com/2003/11/japanese_basics_1.html) and it's sister post Looking at Rice (http://www.justhungry.com/2007/01/looking_at_rice.html) from JustHungry. I hope this one counts, because I have it bookmarked and refer to it all the time! I knew very little about rice other than I would just buy long grain rice from the local supermarket and that was pretty much all they had. This "recipie" is so enlightening and has helped me really branch out and cook multiple different kinds of rice.
3. Guy Does Bento no. 2: Taco-couscous bento (http://justbento.com/handbook/complete-bento-lists/guy-does-bento-no-2-t...) My husband lived in Japan for two years and learned to make "taco rice" there, and we make it often at home, but I had never thought of being able to turn it into a bento. I liked the differences of using couscous and the taco meat recipe he cooked with all the veggies in it.

Thank you! I got your book for my sister (who loves all things Japanese) and was pretty jealous when I looked through it! That would be so exciting to win one myself

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi! Knic here from the Philippines!

I must say I absolutely love your sites and most of my bentos were inspired by your posts!

I especially love the following because they're easy to make and taste absolutely goooooood!

1 egg tamagoyaki (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/1-egg-tamagoyaki-j...) - because yours is the easiest to follow and forgiving to amateurs like me.

Carrot Rice 2 Ways (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/carrot-rice-two-wa...) - great for using left over carrots! and I have a lot of left over carrots!

Forgotten Vegetable Kinpira (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-side-dishes-and-space-fi...) - you could imagine how much steamed broccoli I had to eat just so the broccoli won't go bad in the fridge! with this, I get use the florets for decoration and the stalks (and the left over florets) for kinpira!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

My name is Allison, I live in Atlanta, GA, USA and I generally use the following recipes most often:

1. chicken teriyaki
2. broccoli stalk kinpira
3. sweet and spicy kabocha squash

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi my name is Jason, and I've just started getting into Bento. I live in middle Georgia and serve in the Air Force. My favorite recipes so far are:
• Sweet pepper and carrot confetti (So colorful and tasty)
• All natural vegetable based green, pink and orange rice (my wife, 9 month old son and I love rice)
• egg tamagoyaki (great for breakfast after a workout)

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

  1. Brandon

  2. Alabama (but very soon, Shizuoka)

  3. Negimayaki! (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/ham-negimayaki-gre...)

I love this recipe not because it’s so simple but because it reminds me of the matsuri at the local shrine where I lived. I helped carry the omikoshi, and then feasted on negimayaki and other delicious foods. I was happy to have a recipe to kind of relive this moment back in the states.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Anna from southern Germany. My favorite recipes from your site are:
- Chicken Karaage: Japanese Fried Chicken
- Sweet pepper and carrot confetti
- Homemade furikake no. 4: Spicy curry peanut

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

My name is Michelle Y and I live in Houston, Texas. My husband and I come from different culinary backgrounds (he's white and I'm half Thai), but we both love the recipes on this site. I didn't cook too much before coming across this website, mostly because of lack of time (I'm a graduate student) and I didn't want to spend time cooking things that one of us wouldn't like. Now I use these recipes for dinner, although I do try to make extra and freeze it for later bento use. I love so many recipes from this site, but here are the three that I cook the most often:
* meat soboro (http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/basic-meat-soboro). I try to always have a freezer stash of ground beef soboro, which works great for lunch and dinner.
* tuna tofu miso burgers (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/tuna-tofu-miso-min...). This is probably our favorite recipe--I've adapted it by using gluten-free bread crumbs (which works fabulously, by the way). I've never been able to make enough to freeze for later bento use :-).
* tamagoyaki (http://justhungry.com/tamagoyaki). I absolutely love this recipe and cook it often with dinner--no matter how simple the meal is, having tamagoyaki makes the meal feel gourmet.

Hello, I'm Krysalia from valenciennes in the north of france.

my most favorite recipe from your blog is http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/bento-sized-mini-cabbage- : the mini cabbage rolls . That's one of the first recipes from you that I've made. I was searching some new ideas for low carb meals, and new ways to accommodate cabbage, because I need to eat those veggies a lot with my diabetes condition.

So I tried those or something close, and I was amazed how good it was. It then inspired me a lot of other pork-cabbage delicacies :).

the next two are my second favorites, ex aequo :D :

http://justhungry.com/much-too-easy-fruity-low-sugar-frozen-yogurt : the frozen yogurt with berries, I love that because I used to make some sorbet with frozen berries, but I never thought about putting yogurt in there. the result is more creamy and soft, and now I love that :). It's one of my favorite treats in the summer, (or in the autumn, spring.. well all year round actually :D !!)

http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/rice-cooker-fritta... : The rice cooker fritatta, it is a great way to enjoy vegetables and eggs. I do not have a rice cooker but I tested that in my slow cooker and after a few adaptations it was great ! the only problem is to get out the fritatta since my slow cooker is non coated :D. Anyway we usually cut some squares in there, try to lift them with a spatula and hope for the best :D. It usually works fine :).

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi, I'm Autumn and I love your sites and your book! I live in the upper-midwest of the united states.

My most favorite recipes are your soboro recipes, which really surprised me since I dislike drinking sake at all! I've tried ground turkey soboro and egg soboro, and really love both of them. The recipe for basic meat soboro can be found here: http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/basic-meat-soboro.

I also love tamagoyako (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/1-egg-tamagoyaki-j...). I guess I have a bit of a sweet tooth, but despite that I have been able to loose weight pretty consistently following the recipes on this site and on the justhungry.com site, and packing a bento box every day.

I've recently discovered I also like the flavor of good miso (not the extra-watery stuff you get before meals at cheap restaurants), so I'm looking forward to trying out some of the miso recipes on the site. Maybe Miso Tamago, since I also love eggs :) (http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/miso-tamago-miso-marinated-eggs)

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Hi, my name is Melissa, I'm from Germany, but I currently live in the UK. Narrowing it down to only three favourite recipes is really tricky!
1.) Chicken karaage http://justhungry.com/2004/04/karaage_japanes.html
It has become my favourite fried chicken because the better is so light and crispy and goes beautifully with lemon and a bit of mayo, I like to set some aside for next day's bento, too.
2.) Orange Juice Carrots http://justbento.com/handbook/recipes-sides-and-fillers/bento-filler-ora...
I love the sweet, sour, slightly bitter taste of this dish which provides some variety in the way carrots make it into my bentos.
3.) Japanese Potato Salad http://justhungry.com/2006/05/japanese_potato.html
This is the best for picknicks and goes so well with rice. I love the creaminess and how colourful it is.

Thanks for sharing your recipes, anecdotes and thoughts!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

Oh boy - just up to 3 favorite recipes?

My #1 most loved & used recipe is for your Perfect Fried Rice in a Frying Pan. If I am very careful to strictly follow your instructions, it turns out perfect every time. The minute I get confident enough to not check the recipe, I mess up & it's still delish but not quite perfect.

One of my favorite treats is your Gyoza Dumplings. Though mine always, always inflate hugely when I add the water & then stick to the pan.

I love how quick, easy & yummy the Basic Meat Soboro is.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I'm from the southwest and I love eating taco's. So the Basic taco meat mix is perfect protein filler for my bento. Also Mini fruit fit for bento boxes are perfect for me right now because I have a lot of this food on hand. Last but not least this is the recipe that brought me to your site int the first place ^_^ Onigiri (rice balls)!!

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

I haven't tried a lot of recipes yet, but I did try the basic meat soboro and loved it--I'm not a big fan of furikake because of the seaweed it typically contains, so having another topping option for rice was fun and delicious. :) I have a long list of recipes on here I want to try, too--I found the broccoli stem kinpira last night and since hubby loves broccoli, I really have to try that one!

I am located in central California, USA.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

konichiwa, maki-san! my name is kathyn - my japanese name is kazuko - i live in Chicago, illinois.

i am an avid follower of your justhungry and justbento blogs. many of your suggestions and recipes on both sites have come in so handy for me - it is difficult to pick favourites - and only three at that! so here goes......

1. Recipe: Satoimo -taro root - cooked in miso with tofu - from justhungry - URL http://www.justhungry.com/how-cook-taro-root-or-satoimo . this was the first recipe of yours that i made. my mother used to make a dish very similar to this and it is one of the few dishes that she did not teach me how to make. i was very excited to see this recipe and i was not disappointed with the results. i never thought i would be able to recreate the dish my mother made - and quite honestly, when i made and tasted this recipe - it brought back memories that i thought i would never be able to recreate in my kitchen. the texture and the flavour showcase the humble beauty of satoimo.

2. Recipe: Eggs in treasure bags akaTamago no takarabukuro - from justbento - URL http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/eggs-treasure-bags . this recipe offers a slightly different spin on the takarabukuro that i make for oden. it is a wonderful way to add protein to a meal and shows off the versatility of aburaage. i use a little daikon, carrot & satoimo in the broth and it enhances the flavour imparted in the takarabukuro as well as provides little good bits of veggies to add to the bento.

3. Recipe: Chicken karaage - from justhungry - URL http://www.justhungry.com/2004/04/karaage_japanes.html . i've tried many recipe variations of JFC in my kitchen. Your recipe is one of the best. i totally agree with you that the thigh meat WITH skin on is the most flavourful and moist way to go - especially for bento use - the breast just dries out too much if it isn't eaten right after cooking. i also use negi and shouga - as you do in your justbento variation of this recipe. it is a most requested "snack food" from my japanese kitchen for my american friends. chicken karaage is also an unusual but nice surprise for the center filling of onigiri. when i know i want to use a few pieces for this purpose, i just cut a few of the chicken pieces a little smaller.

doumo arigatou gozaimasu for sharing your knowledge and recipes, maki-san! for someone like me, there are no words to thank you enough for helping to enhance the joy of being Japanese and cooking Japanese food!

sincerely-
kathryn/kazuko

My name is Chi and I'm currently living in Finland.

My favorite recipe is 1-egg tamagoyaki (http://justbento.com/handbook/recipe-collection-mains/1-egg-tamagoyaki-j...). I like eggs, I like the sweet taste which comes amazingly suitable with it, and I like how easy to make and how light it is for the meal.

Re: Flash giveaway! Tell me your favorite recipe(s) from ...

My name is abby and i like in Kearney Nebraska! i absolutely love your articles about bentos and i am so happy i found your site!

this one is actually my fiance's favorite, not mine, but i thought i'd include it

the mini meatloaves, http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/bento-sized-mini-meatloaves he loves when i put things that aren't necessarily traditional Japanese in his bentos for work. he loves whatever i make and i thought i would try this one out because he loves my meatloaf! he loved it and he asks for it all the time!
