How long does it take you to eat your bento?

Hello!

I was wondering how long it takes everyone to actually eat their bentos?

I'm excited about trying bentos, but I'm afraid I wont have time to enjoy all my hard work. Right now I take about a 10-15 minute lunch, but I'm only eating a granola bar.

Thanks for your input. :)

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

Bento or not, 10-15 minutes doesn't seem to me to be a healthy amount of time to eat a meal. But to answer your question, I usually set aside at least 20-30 minutes for a small lunch.

I usually eat lunch during my office hours after teaching both of my world lit classes. I have a total of 1.5 hours in my office, but I spend about 20-30 minutes on lunch.

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

I spend about 15-20 minutes eating; not the healthiest timing (ideally I'd have 30 minutes) but my portion sizes are small. And most of them take less than that to knock together, so I think it's time well spent. :)

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

mh... that is a good question. I think most of the time I'm only taking 10 to 15 minutes, but mostly I'm alone when eating so time spent talking is not counted. Eating slower is better, but if you do not have the time you can be as fast as you always have been

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

For me it depends on the bento. Back at the beginning of the challenge, I was making too much food, and there were two days where I had both lunch and dinner from the one bento. Now I'm making them smaller, and balancing the carbs better, and I find I can take around 30 minutes, or as little as 15 if I'm starving & I chow down in earnest.

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

I take about 20 minutes... if I don't go to the staff lounge to eat with friends, I spend that time reading blogs and surfing the web. On the one hand I think its good for your mind to take a proper (lunch) break from your work even when you don't physically leave your desk, but also surfing the web at lunch stops me from doing it during the time I should be working! :)

Sometimes I find I am hungry for only half my bento at lunch, so I eat the other half around 3:30-4pm, as an energy boost in that afternoon slump time.
Maybe this would be a better system for you if you only take 15 minutes at lunch?

Sometimes I eat my bento lunch watching some video. So I may know how long it takes: about 12 minutes!

About 20min, not the healthiest, but my lunch break is pretty short (30 min now, although it used to be only 20min, so I guess this is pretty good)

It depends on whether or not not I've had breakfast! If no breakfast it won't last past 10:00am.

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

I started making a conscious effort to eat slower and chew more, it really does help prevent over eating. So now it takes me about 20-30 minutes to eat and I feel much more satisfied than I have in years past after eating a meal when I did not really pay attention. And as a bonus I get more time to savor the food and actually enjoy all the subtle flavors in my bentos (and other meals).

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

Well, one little tip if eating slower is your goal. Even if you are super-proficient at using chopsticks, it seems hard to eat as fast, at least that's my experience ;-)

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

I ate my bento of today using choppsticks, I'm not shure about how long it took, but it was slower than usual.
And a good opertunity to practice!

Even better than that, try eating with just ONE chopstick.. that'll slow you down.

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

I usually only get a 15 minute break at my job, so I just make smaller "meals." I guess what I eat are more like snack bentos, so I don't have to rush a whole lot. I still usually take up the entire 15 minutes.

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

For me it can take about 20mins. But since I am focusing on weight loss with my bentos, I've made an effort to slow down a lot and try to really take my time eating so that my stomach feels full after I am done.

my lunch mate and I eat together most days. It takes me about 20-25 minutes to eat after heating and finding a seat in our cafeteria. We walk afterwards most days.

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

Hey on this topic I recently read (I don't remember where, sorry) that the stomach creates a substance that 'tells' the brain that it's full. That information usually takes like 15 min to reach the brain, so if you are trying to lose wheigh, eating slowly will actually make you reduce the amount of food :)
But I'm not a doctor so we'll probably need some research on this topic ^^

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

I think you're thinking of ghrelin, which tells your brain you are hungry; levels of it slowly decrease after you've eaten. Leptin tells it you are full, but it is produced in your fat cells. And yes, eating slowly is a good idea if you want to lose weight. And if you want to avoid indigestion!

The woman at work who teaches metabolism also tells me that exercise is an appetite suppressant, but I have to say that the one time I tried going to the gym just before lunch I ate about twice as much as I would usually have.

I do try to go for a walk before I eat my lunch though, it postpones eating, therefore postponing the next time I'm hungry, and when you exercise before food you are burning fat rather than blood glucose and liver glycogen. There is some evidence that indicates exercising before food does good things to insulin resistance too (again according to the woman who teaches metabolism; it's so long since I learned that stuff only bits remain in my brain and I don't keep up with the literature very well). Severe insulin resistance is otherwise known as type II diabetes.

As much as I might intend to utilize my actual lunch hour to eat my bento, I end up grazing on it over the course of two hours or so!

I think I'm in trouble...today's bento (670ml container) took me no more than 10 minutes and the frightening thing is that while eating it I was sure I was chewing slowly!!!

I think the trick is to eat while you talk to someone! ;)

I certainly agree with this.

I tend to share my bento time whilst talking with someone else and so far I find it normally takes us about 30 to 45 minutes to while away the time whilst we eat and savour the food.

Enjoying good food is wonderful, but enjoying it with someone else is so much better :)

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

That's very true! the Italians say it is unhealthy to eat alone, and it's mostly true. for one, your eating slower because you are also engaged in a conversation. Two you will actually eat less! whether it is from social pressure not to look like a glutton, the fact you can sense when you're getting full because you're eating slower, or you're not as unhappy. I don't know about anybody else out there, but I am what they call an emotional eater :x so when my mood is lighter, I eat lighter! and friends always lighten my mood!

Jepp! That works. Today I ate not alone but together with a friend. It took over half an hour to finish my bento. Get you someone to talk with while eating and you will eat slower

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

Forever! I eat at my desk while reading news and blogs. I'm usually a slow eater, so I would say probably 30 mins for a standard 600-700ml bento. As people have pointed out, the good thing about this is that halfway through lunch, my body starts registering that it's filling up, so I'm not tempted to grab something else immediately after finishing lunch.

Well I really don't know, but I do think I do eat more slowly when I use chopsticks instead of a fork.

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

I probably eat mine way too fast--I'm hungry after having spent time carefully preparing and arranging it! Disappears within a few minutes, which is a bit curious since I am usually a very slow eater and the last one at the table to finish a meal. *shrugs*

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

Hmm I guess ~20-30 minutes while browsing the web. I tend to be a slow eater though not very slow. My normal bento is 900mL. I have 30 minutes for lunch(15 minutes per 4 hours of work time) and any extra 4 hours bring an additional 15 minutes(I love worker rights).

Anyway really depends on a lot. As in does anyone come to bug me while I'm eating(I hate that can't you see I'm eating... I'll listen to your mindless ramblings after I'm done). I tend to enjoy my food and I prefer eating alone in peace and quiet. Even the few times I went out to lunch with coleagues I tended to just smile/nod a lot while eating lunch.

I guess I'm not very sociable, though as our saying goes - Pes hoče pri jedi mir - Dog want's peace and quiet while eating - so if an animal likes that why not the bigger animal that is human ;)

Anyway mindless rumbling off...

Re: How long does it take you to eat your bento?

I have to be an oddity... in the morning, it only takes me about 5-10 minutes to woof down my food, as at job #1 I only get one ten minute break for up to a six hour shift. At the other job, I'll nibble over the length of my 4 hour shift. On the other hand, I think I might be packing bentos that are far too small... *eats 2-3 bentos a day, yay two jobs*

It usually takes me between 45-60 minutes. But rarely am I just eating... there's either conversations going on, homework, or reading.
