Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable handmade bag!

bento4japan-bag.jpg

The Bento4Japan fundraiser organized by my fellow bento bloggers has already raised thousands of dollars to aid Japan’s disaster relief - and it’s still running! And, here’s a chance for you to get one of the prizes that was offered!

I won this bento starter set donated by Angeleyes of BentoFun. Here’s what’s in the set:

  • 1 x 480ml Lube Sheep Bento Box (Pink)
  • 1 x Pan Pita (Pocket Sandwich) Maker
  • 1 x Grass silicon baran
  • 1 x 3pcs pack silicon food cups
  • 1 x Cute picks pack
  • …and last but not least, an adorable handmade bento bag sporting smiling onigiri and even an octopus sausage!

I bid on the auction because I fell in love with the bag….but since it is such a great starter set, Since it’s really a great starter kit, I’ve decided to offer it here as a giveaway. The winner will not have to pay for anything (I’ll cover the postage to anywhere worldwide, and the winning bid price of the auction of course, which will be donated to GlobalGiving to aid Japan’s disaster relief efforts.)

I do ask that you consider donating something more towards Japan’s disaster relief efforts. You may not be able to afford bidding on Bento4Japan auction item, but maybe you can spare a few dollars or Euros (insert your local currency here)! I can’t track donations officially of course, but if you do decide to enter this drawing, just let me know if you donated to the Red Cross or another organization, dropped some change into a donation box, and so on. (And of course, no one would lie about something like that…right? ^_^;) I’ll keep an unofficially tally of what’s been donated. If you’re not sure how to donate, check out the long list I put together here.

How to enter the drawing

To enter, you must leave a comment on this page. (If you’re reading this by email, please click on the title of this article to go to the JustBento web page. I will not accept emailed entries, sorry!) Just let me know where in the world you are (so I can pre-calculate the shipping costs), and if you donated something (how much and to who).

Your comment/entry must be posted by 23:59:59 CET (Central European Time) of Friday, April 22, 2011. The winner will be contacted by email to arrange shipping etc.

Good luck! ^_^

Update: The giveaway is now closed. The winner will be announced shortly!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

As my contest entry, here's my "bento freshman" story:

I'm trying to pack bento-style lunches for me and my husband, and we use Gladware-type boxes with lids. This week I made a beautiful pickled summer squash salad with dijon vinagrette for the small side, and strawberries and apples cut up on the large side (proteins, etc in another small box). Imagine the disappointment when the fruit became pickled strawberries and apples with dijon vinagrette! The liquid (though not the salad itself) infiltrated the other side of the box. Sigh. Seal those liquids, folks! :)

Location: Charleston, SC, USA
Donation: $10 (via REDCROSS text)

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I've donated money to the Canadian Red Cross Japan Earthquake/Asia Pacific Tsunami fund.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

The bento set is very cute, I'm gearing up to make bento lunches for my daughter who starts first grade in the fall. As a family, we have donated money to the Red Cross specifically for Japan. It breaks my heart to see the tragedy there.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

That bag is awesome!

I donated $20 to the Georgia Tech Red Cross Fund. I hope the fund raising is going strong! Thanks for the updates. Much love from Atlanta.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Hi, it is so great that you are doing this. I still can't believe how hard and how long it will take for Japan to come back to what it was before. I live in NY but i have two Japanese friends in Japan and I am so glad that they are ok. I have donated $100 through my company. I hope it will make a small difference...

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

What a cute set! I went to Mitsuwa in IL to buy some groceries because of its mention in your book - what an amazing place! I folded a paper crane there to honor the people of Japan - there was an amazing collection of them there already!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

That bento bag is amazing! The little onigiri are absolutely adorable! Even if I don't win the bento set, I may try my hand at making a similar bag myself^^

I started a collection at my university to donate to the Red Cross for Japan aid. We are having a bake sale on Friday, and the school's Anime Club (of which I am the current President) is matching the money raised by the bake sale. Our goal is to raise at least $100, which will be doubled by the club. We may be serving onigiri at our table, as a change of pace from the normal cookies and cupcakes that seem to be popular here in Central Illinois^^;;

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I have really enjoyed your page, recipes and all the updates on what is going on in Japan.
At our church (I live in Guatemala) we had the children do a bake sale to raise funds for the children in Japan. My 4 1/2 year old daughter and I baked dozens of cookies for the bake sale. She helped to "sell" the goodies on the Sunday at church. She was a bit upset because she thought we were going to send the cookies to the children in Japan. I don't remember how much was raised but it was all deposited into a Red Cross Bank account here in Guatemala that is destined for the Japan Disaster Fund.
I pray things will improve and I hope to one day visit Japan, it looks so beautiful.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Hi! I'm in Chicago. That is such a cute starter set!

I actually donated to a bunch of organizations raising money, but I donated the most to the Illinois Red Cross. Most of the time it was tossing $1s into contribution bins, but the Red Cross got $20 from me.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Hello from Cincinnati, Ohio, USA! I appreciate all your articles and updates of the status of things in Japan. Your generosity is greatly appreciated! I have been following your blog for over a year and consider myself fairly new to making bento, although I've actually grown up with bento (just didn't give it a WHOLE lot of thought at the time-maybe taken for granted?)-I love bento! I really enjoy your blog and your book. They've helped me a lot!

I have donated to Global Giving, Doctors Without Borders, Japan Society, and my local Japanese grocery's donation box approx. $600. I plan to continue giving in the years to come. I have increased my purchases of products from Japan & will continue doing that -trying to support the economy and hoping to travel there, if my schedule allows, this autumn.

Also, I enjoy reading everyone's comments above and the generosity. It's wonderful-what a neat thing the bento community is! Please do not include me in the entry for the drawing. The handmade bag IS absolutely adorable & I'm sure whoever wins will LOVE it! Those onigiri are so darn cute!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

That's a great little kit!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

much love to japan and for you to sponsor this!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I lived in the Kobe area for quite a while about 3 years after their quake and saw widespread evidence of the incredible resilience of the Japanese people. My heart goes out to the recent quake victims. Many thanks for all you're doing to help. In addition to "gaman" Japanese culture is a bastion of cuteness, and the set you've offered in your giveaway has it in spades. Want want want.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I just love the onigiri on the bag ^^ I am located in the UK.
I donated 20 euros through a friend that spent a year in Japan: he recently wrote a book about his trip and with the current events in Japan, he decided to give most of the money from selling his books to the Japanese Red Cross.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I donated $10 to my local church that went to the Japanese relief effort. I am from Atlanta, Georgia.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

very cute! my children (ages 4 & 6) decided to donate their birthday money ($100 collectively) to support the people in japan. my 6-year old son also made a few lei kits to send to some children at his elementary school's sister school in japan.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I am in Florida, USA and that is an adorable set. I've been wanting to start taking bento lunches to work, but haven't gotten any gear yet. If I won this I'd be all set and ready for adorable lunch breaks! ^_^

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Hi I gave 2000¥ to the Red Cross Japan. I love to make bentos with your recipes - they have helped me so much!!!

I live in Paris at the moment and enjoy using French fresh food as well as Japanese ingredients for a treat :)

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

What a cute set! I've been reading about bentos and have been dabbling around a little. I even bought the Just Bento Cookbook. I just need to jump in and get the ball rolling on it.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I am from Portugal and I haven't donated anything directly.
I tried sharing a few videos on youtube which would donate money to the redcross depending on the number of views (for ex. the Honk for Japan video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cciUXpITsu0) or participating in auctions, fund raising.
The bag just made my day :) It's totally adorable!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Wow! what a great set! i would LOVE to have it. i'm still getting started with my bento making and don't have a lot of that stuff!

It's great what you're doing here. I'm in New Jersey.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Oh that bag is so cute! :D

So far, I've put $20 into a group donation with friends through a friend in Japan, handed in to a collection at my home city which was donating to the Red Cross efforts and put my writing up for auction, so the winner could prompt me with something they wanted written. So far, all told, probably about $50 :)

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

SO ADORABLE! ♥♥♥ And a great starter set, too! ^_^ I can see myself giving this to my 16 y.o. niece who is getting into bento'ing. ♥♥♥

I'm from Washington state, US, and I won an auction for $36 on eBay for Bento4Japan charities, and I plan on donating $50 to the Red Cross when my tax return arrives.

Octopus hot dogs were the first kawaii element I started putting into my bentos and are still my go-to cutie look, so I just about squealed when I saw the little guy on the bag!!!

X♥X♥X♥, Maki ~ I love your site and the topics you write about.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I think Canada needs more octopus wiener bento bags. I would like to help make this a reality :D

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I donated to the red cross at my school in fullerton ca :D

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I've been considering it, but honestly I still haven't gotten around to donating.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I'm just starting to bento and this would be perfect! I live in Idaho.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

This is sooo cute! I'm in Virginia, USA

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Oh so cute! I'm in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada. We have a Daiso here that I get most of my bento supplies from (yay for cheap and cute)
I've donated a lot of change. Every time I see the boxes I put in a loonie or toonie, I haven't kept track of it at all. As a university student, it's the most I can do, and I know that every dollar helps.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I realized my first entry didn't have my donation info. In Canada...love wiener Octopi and donated $25 to Red Cross, though I wish I could have donated more :(

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I just donated my change from a grocery purchase to a disaster relief fund. I generally do this everytime I go to the store, unless money's REALLY tight.

I live in Litchfield Park, AZ, USA.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

That's adorable!

I donated $25 to GlobalGiving on 3/13 and I participated in the Help_Japan fandom auction on LiveJournal. The auction as a whole has so far netted over $61,000 in confirmed donations. There's interest in holding a second round, and I'm planning to participate again if it goes forward. My knitted dumpling cat toys were unexpectedly popular!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

It's such a coincidence, but I looked at this exact set just the other week! However, struggling to keep my sister and myself afloat, I couldn't spare much cash at all. So, I did not donate to any formal organization; rather, I passed on some supplies to my boyfriend's family and friends to help them as best I could.

Note: I live in Virginia, USA.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I live in Seattle, and there has been a ton of local events to support Japan. My favorite that I donated to was a 3 night concert series at Chop Suey where all the bands played free and all our door admission went to Japan Relief, as well as raffle tickets for donated prizes, plus 20% of beer sales! Great FUNdraiser. I probably donated 100 bux that weekend. :)

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

My boyfriend and I donated $100 dollars at the Japanese Street Festival in D.C. earlier this month. I actually bought my first bento box while at the festival, too. I'm from Maryland.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Donated to Red Cross at my Asian Grocery in Grand Rapids, MI, as well as organizing a fund raiser with my 日本語会話 group for CRASH Japan.

がんばって日本!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I live in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada and I frequent a lovely little bar where the owner’s wife has taken the time to make hundreds of tiny paper origami cranes. Every time I go to the bar I buy a crane and now I am starting a flock of paper feathered friends. I would give money to this cause regardless, but the cranes are such a heartfelt work, and they are proof that EVERY little bit helps. I adore bento and share the recipes from your blog with my friends and colleagues. Thank you for doing this - contest or not, this is a wonderful gesture!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

aww. these are soo cuteee !
i live in CA, USA and donated $10 to my school Red Cross and folded 100 cranes for two different organizations donating to Japan.(:

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Wow, this is awesome. I'm dying to win this (also because of the bag!) but to tell the truth I'll bet if I do I'll give it to my local librarian who, on my request, ordered for the library all the bento books I have myself, and after reading them is interested in bento-ing on her own. (Oh no! I hope she doesn't know my screen name and see this comment!)

So far, the charities to whom I've given cash are the American Red Cross ($25) and Knitters Without Borders ($39).

Bless all who have given to this relief effort.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...
