Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable handmade bag!

bento4japan-bag.jpg

The Bento4Japan fundraiser organized by my fellow bento bloggers has already raised thousands of dollars to aid Japan’s disaster relief - and it’s still running! And, here’s a chance for you to get one of the prizes that was offered!

I won this bento starter set donated by Angeleyes of BentoFun. Here’s what’s in the set:

  • 1 x 480ml Lube Sheep Bento Box (Pink)
  • 1 x Pan Pita (Pocket Sandwich) Maker
  • 1 x Grass silicon baran
  • 1 x 3pcs pack silicon food cups
  • 1 x Cute picks pack
  • …and last but not least, an adorable handmade bento bag sporting smiling onigiri and even an octopus sausage!

I bid on the auction because I fell in love with the bag….but since it is such a great starter set, Since it’s really a great starter kit, I’ve decided to offer it here as a giveaway. The winner will not have to pay for anything (I’ll cover the postage to anywhere worldwide, and the winning bid price of the auction of course, which will be donated to GlobalGiving to aid Japan’s disaster relief efforts.)

I do ask that you consider donating something more towards Japan’s disaster relief efforts. You may not be able to afford bidding on Bento4Japan auction item, but maybe you can spare a few dollars or Euros (insert your local currency here)! I can’t track donations officially of course, but if you do decide to enter this drawing, just let me know if you donated to the Red Cross or another organization, dropped some change into a donation box, and so on. (And of course, no one would lie about something like that…right? ^_^;) I’ll keep an unofficially tally of what’s been donated. If you’re not sure how to donate, check out the long list I put together here.

How to enter the drawing

To enter, you must leave a comment on this page. (If you’re reading this by email, please click on the title of this article to go to the JustBento web page. I will not accept emailed entries, sorry!) Just let me know where in the world you are (so I can pre-calculate the shipping costs), and if you donated something (how much and to who).

Your comment/entry must be posted by 23:59:59 CET (Central European Time) of Friday, April 22, 2011. The winner will be contacted by email to arrange shipping etc.

Good luck! ^_^

Update: The giveaway is now closed. The winner will be announced shortly!

Thank you for having this giveaway! I am in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I donated change from my wallet (didn't count how much :) - but we have $1 and $2 coins here) at a local Japanese bakery. lol

Now that that is out of the way, I just want to say that since discovering your site I have been experimenting with making bento lunches and I realized today how much joy I get out of making them. Thank you for this site.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I try to help where I can, but unfortunately my financial situtation doesn't allow for much more than the donation of loose change. Still, I'll try to pitch in!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

These are adorable ! The bag is THE. CUTEST. BAG. EVER. Your initiative is so generous !

So far, I donated 50 € to the French Red Cross, as soon as they started receiving donations for Japan. I will continue donating. I also participated by shopping in a charity sale for Japan organized in the Cherry Tree bosquet of the Parc de Sceaux, for Hanami 2 weeks ago. It was lovely!

Location : Meudon, France

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Love the shocked-looking onigiri

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Dear Maki,

I love your recipes and am a close follower of both blogs and Newsletters. I went to a charity concert that was held in Austria, Hall in Tirol, the money we donated (Euro 10 per Person - there were three of us - plus 10 Euro extra) went directly to the Iwate Prefecture Disaster Relief Charity Committee. En plus it was a very beautiful concert, two Japanese women and one tyrolean man played Japanese and classical music. I was very happy to have found something where I was able to do something for Japan AND enjoy good music!

Location: Innsbruck, Austria (if you are sending from Switzerland or france you can also send to Geneva, CH)
Donation: Euro 40,00

Sincerely,

Julia

I would love to win this cute bento box - it reminds me of the amazing school lunches my mom packed for me. I had one hello kitty plastic container and I thought it was the best.

I donated $25 to the Red Cross - I hope this helps!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Oh, that is so adorable!

I'm in Florida, in the US and I've only been able to donate $5 via PlayStation Network for one of the Aid Japan themes for the PS3.. since I don't have much of anything to offer right now. .-.;

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I'm a high-school student who lives in the Chicago suburbs in the USA.

I've been meaning to make bento for the longest time, and just in the last month I finally started to with the lovely bento recipes you have on your site! I've fallen in love and have had it many times since then. However, I still don't have a proper bento box, I have to make do with tupperware containers.

I donated to the Sendai Earthquake & Tsunami Disaster Relief the weekend after the disaster, via Red Cross. I believe it was $25? I also got my dad to donate to the Red Cross from his work, and I believe he sent in $50. ^^

That bento set is so adorable! What a lucky win! The Pan Pita seems especially interesting!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I live in Atlanta, GA, USA, and I donated to Japan through several outlets: $75 to Red Cross Japan was my largest single donation from the batch.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I love your site! I have become a bento addict now. Thanks for all the posts, I have learned alot. I love the bag with the oigiri and sausage. I must figure out how to make it if cause I will have many sleepless nights thinking of how cute that bag is. - Julie

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I donated $20 at a Japanese restaurant near my home. They were going to send the donations on to the Red Cross. I'm in Portland, OR.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I'm another college student, and unfortunately have no wiggle room right now. However, my thoughts have been with Japan. I do have a few ideas of what I might be able to do in the future; after all, it's not over yet, is it?

And yes, I am new to bento, even though I've been reading Just Bento for a few years now!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I just stumbled upon this site, and have made up my mind to start making bento boxes as my university packed lunch! I have donated to the Japan relief efforts through my university's Japanese society.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Oh that bag is soooo adorable! I wish I would have thought to make something like that. . .

I live in Oregon, and I've bought $20 worth of items through Sony Online Entertainment in an online game that I play. All the proceeds of buying these items were to go to Japan relief efforts (it's Sony, so I think I can trust them for something like that ^^;). I wish that I could have donated more (maybe next month right?) but I'm trying to save some money to help my boyfriend move back here next month (so I have someone to make bentos for- horrid cross countryness). All that can be gathered helps though. =]

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Being in Hawaii, we have such close ties to Japan. When the disaster hit, we felt we had to do something to help. My husband and I donated $1,000 to Shelter Box through the Kailua-Kona Rotary Club because they said that these boxes would immediately go to people in need. My friend, a medical Dr. who recently moved to CA actually went to Japan to help. What a great thing to do. So much good and generosity comes out in people when help is needed. Every weekend in Hawaii there is something going on to help. "Kokua (help in Hawaiian) for Japan" just had a concert where local entertainers gave of their time to put on a show. I feel good that people are responding and really care. It's nice to see that.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Hello, I already wrote a long comment to this post yesterday but somehow it disappeared :(.

It went something like this:
I live in Reykjavik, Iceland and studied Japanese language and culture at the University of Iceland a couple of years ago. I have several Japanese friends and family members and through them I felt a little bit of the disaster on a personal level.

I donated ~$45 through the Icelandic Red Cross and wish I could have given more. Thankfully, my countrymen feel a great connection to Japan (even though it's on the other side of the world) so everybody is giving what they can. Us volcanic islanders stick together :)!

I really love bento, as I love most Japanese customs, and one of my greatest wishes is to get a set of my own. There is no place to buy them here and buying them online is much too expensive for a poor student in a country with a defunct currency.

Thank you for sharing your love of bento with us!

All the best,
Kristín

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Such a cute set! I love the auctions and other ideas people have been doing towards this. :)

I'm in Canada and so am unable to work, so I wasn't able to donate anything. But I know my family and church back in my home town would have donated to this and other places that need help.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Yay! it's so cute!
I'm in Canada, and I donated $60 through the Red Cross relief fund at a garden show two weeks ago. I'm also making a cake for a benefit gala at the university here tomorrow. I really wish I could do more!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

It's so nice to see so many have donated. I donated $20 to the Red Cross shortly after the earthquake hit. I am in Ohio, and have just recently gotten into bento (2 weeks so far).

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I'm a college student, and thus I make minimum wage and I only work a few hours a week because of my schedule of classes. But, I was able to scrape up $10 for the Red Cross, I would have liked to given more but the rest of my "fun money", the mony I keep from my paycheck for recreation, went to the relay for life my school hosted.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Hello, my name is Jasmyn Wilson and I've donated $40 to my Japanese class' fundraiser that was later given to the Japanese Red Cross. We still have a Pokemon deco. donation box sitting in class that everyone puts money in. So, I will continue to donate for as long as I can at my school. :D

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

That's absolutely adorable.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I'm from Sydney Australia!

Have donated a few hundred to the Red Cross, and plan to donate when I save up some more!

We were over in Japan when the Tsunami and earthquake hit, and decided that we wouldn't go early, (and only a bit of adjustment to our itinerary!) I'm glad we used our tourist to assist the locals :D!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

hi Maki, I live in Singapore, and I contributed S$20 to help the local efforts here to rebuild Japan. I'm also making it an effort to buy Japanese groceries and eat at the Japanese restaurants. Gambatte!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I have been attending events here in Portugal and I've donated 30€ (I know it's not much, but I'm still a student who lives on her allowance, so I do what I can...)
I know a lot of people who have donated much more though :)

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I have donated $20 to the Red Cross. I live in Kentucky. Not a hot spot for Bento supplies. LOL The need to relief help really hit home with me when my parents house was surrounded by wildfires in Southwestern Georgia. The American Red Cross was really a big help to them and their neighbors. I know really understand the need for everyone to give what they can for people all of over the world.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I am currently looking for a job, so I have no money to spare, but I have been keeping up with the news from Japan and sharing what I learn (thanks to your efforts) to fight misinformation, and I am a Red Cross volunteer. Of course Japan has continued to be in my thoughts and prayers. I know the recovery effort will be a long road, so once I am in a better financial situation myself, I'll definitely be looking at what resources I can donate then.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Hi, I'm a student in Cork, Ireland, and I started learning Japanese at the end of last year. My Japanese teacher and a few other teachers around Cork organised a couple of collection days for the Red Cross, and will organise a few more soon. We collected a fantastic amount, and I was very amazed by the generosity of people here, especially during the hard times most people are currently facing. My sensei and friends made origami cranes to give to the people that donated, and they were a great hit! They worked all night to do them!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Hi, Maki, I'm a high school student in Connecticut, USA. I'm president of the student council, and we created various fundraisers for Japan. We held a student rock concert (one of the bands even played Japanese rock in honor of the earthquake) and raised $140 that night. We then held a massive week-long bake sale at our school for Japan and raised about $470. We donated all of this money to the Red Cross, and I am extremely proud of our efforts to help this nation in crisis. My own family has also given $20 to the Red Cross.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Thank you so much for hosting this contents and prompting folks to donate! It's easy to forget once it's off the front page of the news.

I'm in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I lived in Hokkaido for about 4 years and my brother was there with me, as well as in the Tokyo area for another 6 years. We have many family and friends in Japan - some in Sendai and my sister-in-law's family in Fukushima. I held several garage sales, a Miyazaki movie night with Ponyo (by donation), and was able to raise just over $1000. It all went to the Red Cross for Japan Earthquake Relief. I also have a 2 1/2 year old and I've started making bentos for her lunch at daycare. She loves them! So I'm a newbie in bento-making, but it's super fun! Love that you have lots of vegetarian & vegan recipes!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Hi! I think what you're doing is wonderful!
In donated money to the Red Cross (about $5), but I also helped organize a fundraiser at my school. We sold buttons, 2 designs: one with a silhouette of Japan on a Japanese flag and another with the character for love on a Japanese flag. We sold them for $2 per button, and ribbons for $1 each, and took other donations. Our school made over $1,000. I made the buttons, and I can't believe I never thought of this till now, but, would you like me to donate some buttons to the auctions site or something? Or maybe the winner of this contest can get the 2 different buttons?

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

This is my third attempt at posting this comment!!!

I have donated $20 to my church's aid box for the Japanese Earthquake/Tsunami.

As a teacher, I ADORE bento. I even have a coworker who I bento with and we have a daily competition as to whose bento is more awesome. It's like a little tiny vacation in a box.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

So cute!

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

I've been lurking about for a while, and this kit convinced me to come out of the shadows! I've donated six dollars, and 1.000 cranes (to Oshkosh B'gosh, who will then donate 1,000 piesces of clothing) to tsunami relief efforts.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

The graduate student association in our department, along with lots of help from the community, folded over 2,300 origami cranes for the "Paper Cranes for Japan" campaign. Our cranes joined others from all over the country (and world!), and ultimately the outpouring of these heartfelt paper gestures translated into a $400,000 donation from the Bezos Family Foundation!

I also personally donated to the Network for Good and at a rummage sale to benefit Japan that was organized by the Japanese community in our area (Texas).

I really have a lot of respect for the patience and dignity with which the Japanese people have handled themselves. Thank you for raising awareness.

Re: Bento4Japan Giveaway - Bento starter set and adorable ...

Thank you so much for doing this! It really helps people get motivated to help others.
I donated $10 to Japan through my church. I live in Utah in the United States.
