The details of Week 1 of the challenge are now up! Get Started Bento Challenge Week 1 (link corrected now!)

For myself, I am going to try to do all of the tasks (except for the bento-box measuring and calorie calculations, which I have already done). I will post my bento plan and my photos when I report at the end of the week.

Exercise wise, I have fallen off the wagon since coming back from vacation in November, so I'm going to try to walk at least 30 minutes 3 days this week. (Going to try to do more, but if I set my goals pretty lowish hopefully I won't give up...)

How about you?

[UPDATE:] Post your wrapup reports/thoughts over here!

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I actually will try to do all tasks too.
As I have to go to university and stay there over lunch time at least four times this week, there is a good change I will be making 4 Bentos. More planning is also manageable and taking a picture don't take too long. Mise en place is something my mother trained me in, as she thinks something you realy have to know is how to cook properly.
The biggest challenge for me this week is defenitly the planning point. Last week I tried and it didn't went so well.......
I'll report on the end of this week

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I feel like a real dummy posting this but when I click on the link in red above "Get Started Bento Challenge Week 1" it takes me to a forum window with lots of topics but no individual post with the specific details of week 1(not that I can see anyhow). I must be missing something, just not sure what. Is there a single post specifically about the challenge for Week 1? Maybe it is getting bumped by new posts? I tried to look for a Week 1 post by maki but no luck. Please help.

Also, is it possible to delete a post? (I will probably want to delete this post after someone explains to me what a doofus I am)
Thanks for the help! (and sorry!)

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

Alrighty! I'm in for the whole shebang too.

I've been making bento fairly regularly, but the planning will be quite a challenge for me, particularly while keeping the calorie balance in mind as well. I will also take the opportunity to challenge myself on the exercise front; 3x per week.

Here goes nothin'....

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I want to do them all! (/bangs head on desk to bring sanity into the equation. I know better than to always try them all.)

I'm quite torn because I'm doing two different things with bento style lunches right now. The diet aspect and making simply healthier lunches for my boy. I started the boy's lunches right away this month so I'm getting in the groove there. As far as exercise goes, I've been doing 20min/day (except weekends) on wii fit and I want to continue it.

I think I can do all the assignments this week though and see where things go from there. I already have my boy's lunches planned for next week. Just need to do mine. (And find a "saved for bentos - don't touch on pain of death" box for the fridge or family will sabotage my plans.)

---
Update -
I'm going to use a blog post as a to do list for this week as a test.

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

Sounds good! I will probably do a cross between the basic and going-deeper part of the challenge, as I already make three lunches a week now. (I guess I could up that to three lunches and another day's worth of healthy snacking.) I'll pack snacks that aren't just sweet carbs, yet are still tasty to meet my caloric needs.

As for exercise, I've two days of taekwondo classes planned, and possibly a 30-minute yoga session in between.

I'll post notes and photos at the end of the week. :)

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I'm inexperienced at bento making, but am planning to participate in the full three-part challenge. My one exception/alteration involves the weight loss portion. I'm pregnant and at a healthy weight, so my goal is to provide myself with a nutritionally balanced bento and to continue to gain weight at a healthy rate. It was great to see the linked calorie calculator had an option for pregnant women. With bloating, nausea, food cravings, etc. it's extra hard to figure out if I'm eating the right amount of the right types of food.

I'm going to keep track of my bento challenge stuff on a previously under-used blog I have sitting around :)

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

My goal is to plan my meals ahead of time and journal what I actually eat. I bring lunch and snacks regularly but I don't plan or journal what I eat so I often eat way more than I need.

I like to use a Mr Bento and I ordered a second one on Amazon last night so I don't have the excuse of it being dirty and me being to lazy to wash as an excuse.

Maki - Thanks for setting this up. I think it is great that this started a little later in the year. I'm never ready to get going right away on the first when most of the other challenges begin.

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I'm going to shoot for all of them, just because I like a challenge. I did the calorie calculator and it said I need 1444. Doing that for 5 meals it's about 288 calories, which will probably be just enough for me. Now it's off to research how much stuff I can do for different bento. Oh, by the way it's going to be interesting because most of the time my bento is just a round plastic container. So, off I go. I will make sure to post my first bento and maybe even any recipes I come up with.

I want to participate, I make bentos for my family every weekday anyway! If I'm not doing one for myself (lunch out with friends and so on) will the ones I make for the others count? I'm not as concerned about the calories but I will measuer for that part.

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I'm going to try to do all of them, but I'm going to add a little bit of challenge, as I want to attempt to use each of the bento boxes I have, partly to take a good assessment of what boxes I have and what I have lost. But partly so that I get in the habit of using the large quantity of bento that I own more regularly--and if I just can't bring myself to use a bento box, it's time for it to go!

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I'm all in too :-)

I reckon I'll do as much as I can --and I can already tell that planning will be key. I've had the challenge tucked into the back of my mind, so yesterday when I had a good grrlfriend over for the afternoon, I made a ginormous portion of really tasty fried rice, and there was enough for us to have a good early dinner, for me to have an, er, somewhat later & smaller dinner, and I put 5 lunch portions in the freezer!

And then today I listened to a good audiobook, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me on NPR, and a bunch more audiobook, all the while working on bento johbisai bits. I made a nice plateful of mini meat cakes, another plateful of eensy meatballs, few days worth of grated carrot, a delicious batch of curried celery & turnip kinpira, and 9 onigiri --two of which I made into yaki onigiri. I put the various meaty things in the freezer, along with the onigiri. This is my first time trying to freeze the onigiri, and I'm eager to see how they taste after being frozen.

I had a lovely bento with bits that I'd made today for late lunch, and as I sat back and looked at my work, I thought: wow, that took some time! I'm real interested to see how much I can streamline the process. I did notice that Maki often mentions making bento johbisai things as part of her dinner-making, so I'll try to keep that in mind. All in all I'm pleased; I have a week's worth of lunch basics all ready to go.

I also worked a bit filling out the weekly menu planner. I adore filling things out, and making menus is particularly fun, and I really love the PDF that Maki is sharing --it's super sweet! A few years ago I kept a Very Thorough food diary, and this is a nice way for me to do that again; I found it extremely helpful to know exactly how many calories I was eating. I found that the hyper-mindfulness led sort of organically to my eating fewer calories, and more balanced & healthy meals. I'll fill out the rest tomorrow.

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I'm going to try to follow somewhere between 'deeper' and 'weightloss'. I know how much my boxes hold, but am more interested in portion control than calorie counting. I perhaps take lunch with me 3 days out of 5 so will aim for all 5 days and post pics as well. Actually the posting of pics will be my challenge. I have a digital camera and have had it for over a year- I've taken 3 pictures. That's what I need to improve!

I've been looking at bento boxes on ebay but have resisted buying a new one until I have completed at least a week of the challenge. I already have 3 and they don't often get used so I need to prove to myself that I will use them before I go for another one (the red rabbit or blue dragonfly lube sheep ones caught my eye as you can get loads of accessories for them)

Last week work was absolutely mad and I did 60+ hours instead of the usual 37. I'm putting my foot down and not doing that for the next 5 weeks. This month is all about me!

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I am also pregnant and having the morning sickness that will not die (4 1/2 months, still throwing up daily ... but for the first three, I was throwing up literally so non-stop that I couldn't leave the house, so I suppose this is an improvement).

So I'll be hybridizing the challenges as I go along. :) This week I will be focusing on making bentos my HUSBAND (assuming I prepared food this week, which is a bit chancy). That way I'll get practice with the bento techniques and the good habits (prepping ahead, etc.) but I won't have to rely on my currently-odd eating habits.

I will be doing the "basic" part (and probably preparing the whole bento the night before -- my morning sickness is much worse in the morning). I will probably be skipping the "going deeper" as not much planning currently occurs in this house ("What do you think you can eat?" "Um ... cheese? And an apple?" "Sounds like dinner."). I will be attempting some exercise -- either a prenatal yoga class, or some moseying on the treadmill at the gym, or both, depending on how I feel. I was being a very good pregnancy exerciser, around the morning sickness, until I had the stomach flu over Christmas and got out of the habit.

I'm trying to remain very flexible and expect things to go wrong. :)

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

Congratulations on the baby! *hugs* I'm sorry the morning sickness has got you but, I'd say going from three months of being unable to keep ANYTHING down to just mornings is a vast improvement!

I couldn't help but giggle at how y'all's supper plans normally go right now. Just my personal opinion, I think the yoga wouldn't be a bad thing, Who knows? You and baby might actually enjoy it. Oh by the way, just cause I'm curious, Do you know the gender yet? Okay, enough with babies. lol.

Sounds like you have a good plan formed too. If you need any ideas for the hubby's bento I'll be happy to toss some ideas at you!

Hope all goes well with you and baby!

I think we will enjoy it, but we have to have enough of a barf-free day to manage to make it. :)

We don't know the gender yet but we might learn this week!

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I will be starting Week 1 a day late because I'm flying back to Newcastle, England Monday/Tuesday for another month at Uni (I have a 2-continent life - but its not nearly as fun as it sounds!). I am going to try something between Going Deeper and the Weight-loss as well - I already take a lunch to Uni almost every day, so now I am going to try and pre-plan my lunches so they are healthier and more interesting than just days and days of boiled (car-shaped) eggs, toast, and a bit of cheese! :) I spend long days at Uni too, so I think I will have to start bringing more fruit and other snacks.

The exercise bit is easier for me when I'm in the UK - I have to walk 25 min into Uni in the mornings, and I go to two weekly exercise classes there with a friend of mine - one of them is quite challenging, but the instructor is SO cute which is great motivation! :)

Avlor, what is the Wii Fit like? Is it effective? I've been eying a Wii for ages now, and the Wii Fit seems like a great way to persuade my husband that we *need* one! :)

Good luck with week 1 everyone!

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

Hubby and I are up for the whole challenge - we both need to lose weight. He'll probably be signing up on the forum at some point, but at the moment he's too busy planning tomorrow's bentos! Seeing how he's the chef in our family and I'm the photographer, it's pretty clear how we'll be dividing the work: he'll plan and I'll help him. He'll cook. I'll take photos and eat!

We've had bento lunches for about a year now and we also take them for walks, picnics etc. so we can't do the "do one more bento" bit, but we recently started slacking with our weekly food planning so as part of the challenge we will try and get back into the habit of planning our complete weekly menu using one of Maki's wonderful menu planners.

My challenge for next week is to go back to cycling to work, starting with two times next week and hoping to increase it to full five by the end of the challenge series. And getting back into the routine of swimming three times a week. Phew! It sounds bad now that I've written it down, but I actually did all this until December when I started slacking due to various reasons like cold and being too busy.

I found that a lot of Japanese food really helped with my nausea when I was pregnant. Anything with GINGER in particular. If you like ginger, try including it in some of your meals - it might help you!

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I have a head start already ;p I have been packing bento's since January 2nd. My main new years goal was to pay off my credit card which influenced my bento~ing. The secondary goal was to lose some weight, so I have been calorie counting what goes into my boxes. I have been blogging my bento on blogger so I will continue to keep updates there. Good luck to everyone~!

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I plan on doing all three levels... except that when I pack bentos I honestly do it the night before (and usually my bentos are glorified leftovers from earlier in the week with a few extras added here and there) so the mise en place is not quite as important to me as the other things.

I have sat down with my boyfriend and we've planned out dinners for the whole week using Maki's spreadsheet planner, and I am in the middle of planning my actual breakfasts, snacks, and bentos for the week. I am aiming for between 1500 and 1800 calories a day, so my bentos generally tend to check in around 500 calories a piece. That works very well for the sizes of bentos that I have.

Exercise-wise I intend to go to my regular ballet class on Thursday, start a new weight lifting regimen that will last about fifteen minutes each day (with five pound weights, haha), and walking to the grocery store at least twice this week.

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

Greetings Everyone!

I am striving for the weightoss and healthy bento challenge.
My caloric needs are between 1850-2200, so I'll eventually want to keep my bentos around 600-700 calories. For week one, my goal will be learning portion control and not over-packing. I measured my container and one section puts me over so I'll probably just use that part for sauces, napkins, picks, etc.
I'm horrible at planning and prep so this will definitely be a challenge for me. I have plenty of ingredients, it's just a matter of putting them all together into something tasty. My goal for this week is 3 bentos. For exercise, I have a weekly water aerobics class and line-dancing group later this month. I'll post pics and a report at the end of the week too.

Thanks Maki for organizing this :)

We are strapped for cash at the moment (especially after going to the supermarket today), but as the Circus of Horrors is in town this week and it's £65 for tickets for the 3 of us, I really need to cut back to pay himself back for buying the tickets on credit card. I've decided to walk to work and back every day this week..... Wish me luck!

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I was thinking about this additional challenge some more. I also have more boxes than I need/use so I am going to try to use a different one each day until I decide which ones I really don't like and can part with which will clutter bust a bit.

I am also going to try to use this challenge as a way to clean out the pantry of all the half used boxes of this and that, the furikake I keep skipping around, the mixed rices and so on...frugal and clutter busting.

Thanks for the idea!

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

Thank You Maki for this challenge. I have several goals I am working towards this year though I think the main two are weight loss (it's my sister's wedding at the end of the year) and money saving (the poor economic climate and I want to get some more things done to my house this year); and I think making a concerted with my bento making will definately help.

I do Weight Watchers so I will be working out the points for my bentos, I think 10pts (I've a total of 30pts for the day) should see me through until dinner. I measured my boxes this evening and have decided which one I will mainly use, it one of the smaller ones (440ml) but will mean I have to cut back on the carbs (my downfall).

My goal is to make bentos for the 4 days I am at work this week and not buy anything from the vending machines. The other goal that this challenge has inadvertantly set for me is 'mise en place', I have a very bad habit of leaving the kitchen in state and the washing up still to be done before I go to bed! So I will have to tidy up so I can lay everything out for the mornings!

Off to charge my camera battery now so I can take piccies in the morning!!

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

Thank you for your idea, Maki. However, the first challenge is practically impossible for me to follow: You can plan your means if you have a regular job, a regular home and so on... I'm doing scientific research, so I'm lucky if I know how long I'll have to work the next day! Also I hardly ever know if I'll sleep at home or at my boyfriend's place, never have time for shopping (or get food and then don't come home for a week and everything is spoiled) and (most importantly) am very spontaneous about if and what I cook in the evening. If I write down that I'm going to make pasta and use leftovers for bento on Wednesday, I'm pretty sure that I'll want to have salad or pizza or sushi when the day comes!

As for organisation, I hate waking up earlier for anything, so I don't. I make my bento the night before... Things that merge or go bad overnight just don't go into my bento, period.

Anyway, my challenges will be the following: Finally get the design of my blog up and running and learn which kinds of food are carbs, proteins and fats. I don't really need to diet so I've never cared. So far I've lived by general "A plate of pasta is bad but better than a whole chocolate bar" terms, it's been fun actually figuring out what kind of food will be what in tomorrow's bento.

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

As JJ sobey said, I seem to recall Mythbusters testing various nausea remedies and ginger being the only one that actually seemed to work, so that might really help! :D

I think my goal for this week is going to be to aim for all of the goals (make a bento, mise en place&planning, count the calories) but to make at least 3 of them this week, which seems like a good start from zero since I've (sort of) been into the bento-making habit before. Since I'm only working 3 days this week I think that's a decent goal, but if I happen to get more of them in for myself or bf for portion control/fun I'll still be happy! I think planning is the thing that I need to focus on the most though, as I wake up with absolutely nothing leftover from dinner or nothing in the freezer and end up not being very motivated to make anything of course

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I'm so excited for this challenge! I made bentos for hubby and myself last night (Sunday) for us to enjoy at work today (Monday). My goals are to preplan as much as I can, make them the night before, and just enjoy the whole experience. Planning will definitly be my biggest challenge but seeing everyone's pictures, its so inspiring!! And of course, the amount of great recipes that Maki has helps tremenously as well.

I made 4 onigiri last night with tuna, mayo, pickles, and onions (2 wrapped in nori) and boy oh boy, are they delicious!!! Will have to try making them with different filling for sure. I'm thinking sardines, mayo, and eggs as my next ones. Yummy!!

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

Well, I've managed to get myself off to a good start on the challenge. I'm going to see if I can do the whole week although I haven't planned all my boxes yet! I printed off the pdf just now and I know what I'm making tomorrow but I'll plan the rest of the week when I get home tonight.

Today we had a variation of Bento #1 but used turkey instead of tofu, had half a hens egg instead of quail and used shallots instead of spring/green onions. I precooked the rice on Friday and it was in the freezer this morning ready for me to go. I did all my mise en place last night and cooking and assembley took 20 minutes exactly this morning. I did have to dig out a couple of extra utensils which spoiled my flow and I didnt boil my egg for long enough as the yolk was runny (this is how my wife likes all her "hard" boiled eggs so I'm too used to cooking them like that!).

My goal is to do 5-6 pt. bentos (around 500 calories) 3 times a week.

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

Well today's bento was a complete success. I strolled back from the kitchen with my plate to various cries of "What you got?" and "Ooh that looks nice"! It was the perfect amount to keep me going until I got home at just gone 6 (I had lunch at 12). Tomorrow's is either leftover butternut squash and red lentil curry from last night or tofu and steamed veg.

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

Hmm... I'm still undecided, but I'm pretty sure I won't be going deeper. I have an issue with bento planning, since a lot depends on my mother's cooking. She's gotten very stroppy lately about my cooking attempts in the morning. I don't know why! She says I shouldn't spend so much time on lunches so other people can eat them, but I make them primarily for myself, I don't know where she got that idea. Granted, I tend to add a little more rice and meat than I would usually eat myself, because my friends like to eat it off me (unsurprisingly, I never need to worry about my veg being stolen).

I guess I will do the Basic and try the Weight Loss too. My boxes vary in volume between 500, 700 and 750 ml. My daily calorie intake should be about 1440cal, so I guess I can aim for bentos of 500cal, since I don't eat breakfast and snack a little during the day (dinners in my household, on the other hand are quite huge). Other than that, I'll be aiming for more balance in my bentos, and maybe and extra veggie boost (I've suddenly started obsessively craving fresh fruit and veg - mmmm.... crispy, juicy goodness).

In terms of exercise I'll set my first aim to be like Maki's and tack onto that a kickboxing session once a week ^_^

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I am aiming for somewhere between basic and going deeper. I already make bento lunches most days, so the goal is to make one every day that I'm not having some sort of lunch meeting. I will post my plan and how well I did with it on my blog at the end of the week, as well as daily posts about each lunch. I've done most of my cooking for the week already, but have to see how much I can streamline in the mornings. Right now it's taking at least a half an hour, and it shouldn't take so long.

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I was aiming to do all aspects of the challenge (allthough I already know the capacity of my own bento), but since I'm fairly sure the creature from the blue lagoon has dropped out, there's little point in the weight loss aspects as my BMI is normal. I will probably post how I did at the end of the week if there's a thread for it. Or is that not what we're meant to do?

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I love it when people turn their heads and show a bit of lunch envy ;) Home cooked food smells and tastes so much better, and doing a nicely presented bento makes it look good too! I'm looking forward to getting into the flow and learning to make various types of onigiri etc :)

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

So I guess my goal is going to be four bentos this week.

I am interested in the weight-loss aspect, but I can't be bothered to do that much measuring. ^_^ (Besides, my extra calories tend to come from after-work cocktails.)

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I will try my best to do all the tasks. I'm on a gluten free diet so I will have to prepare my bento every day and I really want to improove the pre-planning part!! I do not want to loose weight but my efforts will be focused on preparing filling bentos to avoid being too hungry before dinner (I always end up eating junk food while preparing dinner..). I'm so happy to join the challenge

thank you !!!

Morning Sickness

Thanks for the morning sickness tips! Unfortunately, it's very hormone-driven and nothin, but nothin, will make it stop. I've tried just about every remedy under the sun! Fortunately, it does seem to be backing off, finally.

For anyone else fighting morning sickness, I do have reasonably good luck with lemon at least dampening it down ... and Lemonheads candy to suck when I leave the house! Ginger was only okay, but did help; peppermint was meh but having something to suck on helped. I think you just have to experiment to find what works for you!

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

Hi all,
I'm going to try and do all the aspects of the challenge. I "practiced" last week and had a bento every day. It was great because I didn't lose prac time at school (2 days) because my lunch was already there and ready and on work days (3) I went and had lunch outside in the sunshine to top up my vitamin D like the doctor told me too.

I'm gluten free as well and need to lose some weight so the whole concept of a bento lunch/snacks is great. I have a lock'n'lock set with one "big" container, another the same size with three compartments, and a drink bottle all in a thermal bag which is great since it's going to 38 degrees C today.
I generally make lunch the night before as I just started going to the gym before work. I have a stack of mini muffins and scones in the freezer that I made last week and attempted my first sushi rice on the weekend (failure! I didn't make enough rice for the seasoning so it's kind of sweet but tasty enough). I don't think I'm ever going to be able to make things up first thing in the morning, there isn't enough brain power to play with hot/sharp things at that hour.

My biggest goal for the challenge is to start eating more fruit and veges and remember some protein which I often forget (like today).

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I intend to do all three levels. I've lost some weight already, but I have still have more to lose. The spring semester is just starting back up, so the timing of this challenge is excellent.

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

It didn't bother me at all to start Tuesday, as I used the weekend to shop and Monday to plan. I'm going to try to make bentos for the whole household, which is 5 each day. If I'm going to make them for myself,I might as well make them for everyone else, as I make lunches and dinner for everyone most days. Breakfast, you are on your own.

I'll be making them for two guys, one middle aged but with a fast metabolism so he eats like a teen, a teen boy, and two teen girls and me, a middle aged, slow metabolism lady, who needs to lose some weight.

I've been making a lot of stuff in advance and blanching a lot of veggies so they last longer and make for quick morning prep.
I plan to make some big stashes of mini burgers and stuff like that, but so far I've just made a big batch of salmon furikake and hard-boiled eggs. We'll see how it goes, but I'm excited about getting going and getting some planning into the chaos that is our mornings around here!

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

Made my first bento. Had thought I was so organized but ended up 30 minutes late for work! Think I need to work on the ''planning" a bit more

Re: Challenge Week 1 Talk

I’m looking at this challenge as an attempt to “get it in gear”. I began making bento in August when I went back to work after summer vacation. I got a bit lazy with the planning as the semester went on. To help me get organized, I have printed the new chart with all meals and am planning for the wacky schedule we have at home.

Thanks Maki, I love your planning hints and tools!

I’m off to a good start; I posted my lunch today in the Flickr group. But note - my Flickr account is under my beading name SuperiorBliss.

Also… booklegger – I love the suggestion of using a different container each day. I went a bit crazy at http://www.ichibankanusa.com/ when I first got started and your suggestion gives me a chance to see what I really want to use.
