Hello-I just joined this forum-I am very excited to have found it-My son and I returned to the US from Japan in November-I lived there 13 years and he was born there and is half-Japanese-He has eaten Japanese food since he could eat and at school in Japan he always had really yummy and healthy(compared to my area) school lunch-When we moved to the US he had school lunch and then i found out that he is allergic to eggs, sugar, gluten/wheat, chicken, pork and a host of other things so he needs to bring his lunch-Since regular sandwiches are out things like onigiri and side dishes work best for him-I'm looking forward to reading and trying all the recipes!

hey if you find out any stores near the northsore area, I live in hammond and the closest one that I know of is all the way in Baton Rouge on florida boulevard. (there's actually two of them almost directly across the street from one another, oddly enough). If you find any others, I would love to know about them too!
Hi. Welcome to Just Bento. Did you only find out about your son's allergies when you got back to America? Did he have problems in Japan, or are they only since the return?
Bronwyn
My blog is Food and Shoes
I am originally from New Orleans, born and raised, although I live in California now. I am Japanese American (both parents). Let me know if you need info on Japanese stores and communities.
Hi Bronwyn,
Thanks for your reply. I found out about his allergies in the US-He had problems in Japan but not as consistently as he has here. It has been getting better since I cut all the foods he is allergic to
Hi! Thank you for your reply! I would love any info on stores and community. We have joined both the Japan Club and Japan Society-We are on the Northshore so if you know of any Japanese communities there please let me know.
Thank you so much!
Hmm. Interesting. Sorry for being nosy, I'm just quite interested in this (relatively) recent upsurge of allergies in kids. I wonder what it is about America that makes his allergies worse.
Hi Bronwyn,
No worries-You are not being nosy:) One thing that I thought about is that in Japan his main carb was rice which he is not allergic too. And he ate a lot of fish and veggies-When we moved here he had wheat bread as we thought that was healthy-and turkey sandwiches and chicken all of which he is allergic to so for him it could be the change in food or just the general stress in moving-I wonder too about the recent increase in children's allergies-on the upside though-at least it is helping explore new cooking options
hello! I am also interested in the allergy aspect of diet. If I may, what sort of symptoms was your son experiencing?
Hi, sorry for taking so long to reply-His symptoms were congestion, bloating, bedwetting, dark circles under his eyes-since he's been off the foods this has all cleared up and his eyes are brighter-a few weeks ago he mistakenly had a dish with just a little soy sauce, seasme, garlic and sugar (three of these he is highly allergic too) it was in a sauce and I took most of it off the rice -he fell into a deep sleep and was lethargic all afternoon-very interesting reaction
Hi-Wow-you are near -we live in ponchatoula-I will try the shop on Florida-Thanks for the info!
