Re: What is your favorite breakfast that keeps you full ...

Very boring, but I love it - porridge.
Made with rolled oats, and with full cream milk and a little brown sugar on top. I feel as though I shouldn't need to add that it's cooked with water and salt, but seeing the things some people do to maybe I'd better.

I'm with Bronwyn in voting for porridge. And because I live in a fruit growing region I often have it with stewed fruit.

I also like to have oatmeal (is this what you mean by porridge) for breakfast, but lately I feel really hungry within 2 hours. I even have it with nuts and fruit too. How big a bowl do you have? I usually make 1 serving, which is a 1/2 cup of dry rolled oats. Maybe I just need to increase the serving.

Re: What is your favorite breakfast that keeps you full ...

Yes, oatmeal is porridge. Although in New Zealand we don't have the choice of steel-cut oats the rest of the world has, only rolled oats. Goodness knows why, maybe we just never built the right sort of mills.
I never actually measure it, I just pour in the amount I feel like, and somehow I manage to judge the amount of salt to go with that. I'd say it's usually about half a cup though. I do tend to put a lot of milk on it, so maybe that extra protein does the trick.
I also have to confess that I only gave up smoking four years ago, and as a smoker I had a cup of coffee and a cigarette for breakfast. Not the healthiest, and a plate of porridge seems quite large after many years of that.
My sister-in-law used to eat a sort of barley porridge that she reckoned kept her feeling full for a long time. Just the same as oatmeal but made with ground barley instead. The ground barley has a name, but I forget what it is.
I agree with the others who recommend protein for keeping you feeling full. There is a school of thought that says you should eat your biggest meal for breakfast and your smallest in the evening. You could try that! The thought of a full meal on waking up doesn't really thrill me personally.
You could also pack yourself a snack for mid-morning.

Re: What is your favorite breakfast that keeps you full ...

I also eat porridge (or oatmeal). I make mine with sugar (brown or white) with cinnamon. I also cut up apple while it cooks and put it in the bowl first. Then I put the oatmeal on top and stir it around. Add a splash of milk and it does a decent job. However, I think the best advice for making a breakfast that keeps you full until lunch is to include a protein, a significant amount of carbs, and some kind of fruit and/or veggie. I know that sound basic, but it's especially important for breakfast. Eat a lot, too, because you'll burn it all off during the day. I really like omelettes. You can easily make an omelet with no mess by putting the eggs in a sandwich bag, then add whatever else you want (cheese, veggies, bacon, spices, etc). Mash them all up to mix well, then put the sandwich bag in boiling water. Boil until cooked through, then just open the bag and slide the omelet out! It's really easy, creates no mess (since the only thing touching the pot was hot water), and you don't have to worry abut burning or flipping the eggs. It's also really useful for camping trips!

Am omelet in a bag? What an amazing idea! Do you use a 'ziploc' bag? Would it work as an obento item? I shall try this out.

Re: What is your favorite breakfast that keeps you full ...

Yeah, I use a ziploc bag, because you don't want any of it coming out. I think it could definitely work as a bento item, since sandwich bags are pretty small, so it's very individually portioned. The only thing is that this omelet has a moister (aka sorta slimy) texture than a regular omelet. But if you don't have major texture issues, then it's not bad.

I go for cereal. The hubby likes Nestle Fitnesse, I prefer the simpler cornflakes (I find the Fitnesse cereal to be a little bit too dry). I drown them in milk, then add a lot of fresh fruit like grapes, apples, bananas, mangoes, etc..

Very esoteric perhaps... but my favorite breakfast is natto, a cut up avocado, a bit of soy sauce, and some warm rice. ^_^;

Re: What is your favorite breakfast that keeps you full ...

No, I actually love natto! I've never thought it tasted gross. My favorite way to eat it is with smooshed umeboshi, sesame seeds, and a tiny tiny bit of soy sauce on rice or noodles. Yummy. I don't buy it all that much though because it's a little expensive where I live, but no more than yogurt I suppose. But some sort of bean for breakfast is a good idea because the extra protein will probably help.

Alan S, an Australian who has type 2 diabetes, has a web site on how he lives with the condition. It includes a lot of meal ideas (Maki may have come across this site in her recent research). He prefers low carb high protein breakfasts and may have some ideas you might find useful.

http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2006/10/breakfasts.html

He also a recipe for a Psyllium, Fibre, Muesli and Nuts mix, that he takes at night to achieve a slow carb release, which may work as a good breakfast for you.

Re: What is your favorite breakfast that keeps you full ...

Bit plain, perhaps, but at the moment I am in love with dippy eggs and soldiers! I always think it's a bit unbalanced as a breakfast, but I guess you've got the carbs and protein. Maybe some citrus fruit to go with it would help; orange juice or a grapefruit. I find it definitely keeps me full till lunch!

Unconnected, really, but I remember as a kid asking my Mum what un-toasted bread slices with bolied eggs was called, seeing as toast slices are called 'soldiers'...she flippantly said 'civillians', but as an innocent kid I believed her for years. I still think it's cute now!

Difficult to dip your civilians in an egg though - too floppy.

Re: What is your favorite breakfast that keeps you full ...

I usually make oatmeal - in the microwave. 1/4 cup quick oats, 1/2 cup water, 1/2 apple and a tablespoon of ground flax and almond slices. 2 minutes in the microwave. Once it is cooked I add anywhere from 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of low/no fat cottage cheese and a teaspoon of brown sugar splenda. I eat around 6 am and that keeps me going until about 1.

Re: What is your favorite breakfast that keeps you full ...

My daily breakfast anywhere between 6-8 a.m.: A thick slice of homemade, whole wheat bread with natural peanut butter (that is, only peanuts - no salt). I also have my infamous "20 grit smoothie' made with 1 cup plain rice milk, 1/2 of a frozen banana, a few small, frozen strawberries, 1/4 cup frozen wild blueberries, and about 4 tablespoons of ground, golden flax seed. I've covered all my bases for food groups, and it keeps me going until 12-1 p.m. On the rare occasion I eat anything else, it is usually scrambled eggs and oatmeal (made with soy milk) with lots of dried fruit mixed in. I've always found that boxed breakfast cereal, no matter what kind, just doesn't fill me up. My girls like it though, so they doctor it up with tofu powder and dried fruit before adding soy or rice milk. They drink some kind of fruit juice with it. They are still starved by noon though. I wish I had their metabolism!

Muesli! :D I mix my own, because commercial mueslis are a bit light on the fruit/nut side, or have only sad little pieces of fruit in them.
I cut up dried fruit (such as dates, figs, apples, pears, prunes, mangoes, etc...) and nuts (pecans, walnuts, almonds...) and mix them with old-fashioned (the large ones) oats.
My preferred ratio of fruit/nuts to oats is 50%. Super delicious! :)

I'm also a big fan of oatmeal/porridge. I like to sweeten it a little with honey, then to add cocoa powder or matcha. A tablespoon of peanut butter or a spice mix (cinnamon, cloves, cardamom) tastes great too.

Re: What is your favorite breakfast that keeps you full ...

I'll second (tenth?) the recommendation on oatmeal. To make it stick, I always cook it with nonfat milk, not water (for the added protein), and I also add wheat germ and wheat bran (you could substitute oat bran) for additional fiber and protein, and ground flax seed for joint health (also adds a little fat, which also helps satiate). I sweeten it with local honey (helps prevent allergies), and top with either chopped fruit (fresh or frozen, and any fruit will do) or cocoa powder and chopped nuts for a treat.

If I'm going to be burning a lot of calories before lunch, I may add a smoothie with protein powder (or dried okara) or peanut butter (banana-pb or choco-pb are both excellent). Or I'll bring a snack -- nonfat plain yogurt with some frozen fruit to keep it cold, a boiled egg and some carrot sticks, a handful of nuts, etc.

Re: What is your favorite breakfast that keeps you full ...

Not weird at all, perfectly normal thing to eat. Haven't had it for years, but it used to be a favourite of mine as a kid. Mine was a very unhealthy version - I used to butter and marmite it, then split it through the middle and turn it inside out so the butter and marmite are in the middle, then butter it again on the outside.

scotch porridge - discovered this while staying in a guesthouse in bath UK. just cook oatmeal as normal, in another pan scotch & brown sugar. cook until it reduces & pour the syrup over the porridge!

Re: What is your favorite breakfast that keeps you full ...

I keep trying to eat oatmeal/porridge for breakfast but I'm STARVING in just an hour or so. The thing that keeps me going the best is a yogurt based smoothie with berries and chia seeds. The chia seeds make all the difference!!!

I also like huevos rancheros for breakfast but that's not a quick morning breakfast deal. I'd say it's the Mexican version of Maki's natto, avocado and rice so it hold you over REALLY well!

Steel cut oats which I place, with water and salt, in my Zojirushi rice cooker the night before. I set the timer and wake up to the lovely smell of porridge.

Re: What is your favorite breakfast that keeps you full ...

I have the same mid-morning starvation issues, I have breakfast before 7 am and lunch isn't until noon. My current breakfast has kept me full the longest so far, though I think 5 hours with no food is probably just unrealistic of me... But still, this is my "best effort": muesli that's high in nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, macademians, pecans,... but no dried fruits, don't like them) mixed with 0% fat natural yoghurt and topped up with a couple of spoons of stewed fruit. Right now it's plums (I boil them down with a splash of orange juice, no additional sugar necessary) and in winter I like to stew apples with some raisins - they plump up nicely - and loads of cinnamon. The fruit keeps well for over a week in the fridge in some tupperware. This works best for me - my mom swears by porridge too, but I just can't stand the structure... I prefer some crunch :)

Re: What is your favorite breakfast that keeps you full ...

Warm weather--I like an apple cut up, yogurt, nuts, coconuts, mixed in one bowl. Sometimes i will sprinkle granola/muesli all over it too.
Cold weather--usually hot muesli or oatmeal mixed with peanut butter topped with a cut up apple, nuts and coconut. Sometime chocolate chips.
OR whole grain toaster waffles with PB, nuts, coconuts and a slice apple.
I really think the apple is the trick to keeping me full.

I make a big batch of steel cut oats in a small crock pot. Divide into portions in bowls with lids and freeze them. In the morning I add applesauce maybe raisins and cinnamon I microwave it later at work
