The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

JUST-BENTO_bookcover.jpg

The giveaway is now closed. The winners will be contacted and announced later this week. Thank you everyone for entering!

To commemorate the new edition of The Just Bento Cookbook, I’m going to give away 2 signed copies! The new edition has the exact same content as the previous edition, but just has a slightly different form factor (a wee bit smaller (but not much), and no dust jacket (but the cover is printed in full color)). I am very glad it has been reprinted again; as I mentioned before, the original publisher closed its doors in March, but the publishing rights were picked up by another division of the same parent company, Kodansha USA. So anyway, here’s your chance to get your hands on one! It’s too late to get the book to the winners before the holidays, but it should arrive in the New Year when you’re all ready to tackle those healthy/frugal eating resolutions.

All you have to do is leave a comment to this post (not an email reply if you are reading this by email: click on the title to come to site, and post your comment entry here!) Be sure to put your email address in the appropriate box (it will be hidden from prying spammers, not to worry) so that I can contact you if you win. In the body of your comment, state the following:

  • where you are located in the world (everyone is eligible, as long as you live somewhere where mail can reach you)
  • your gender, profession and general age bracket (you can be vague about the age ^_^ I’m just a curious bunny about who my readers are)
  • who you make bentos for primarily - or plan to make bentos for if you havent’ started
  • (optional) What you want to see on JustBento. A specific recipe? A how-to? I’m all ears!

Only one entry/comment per person please! The deadline for posting your comment is 23:59:59 of Monday, December 19th CET (Central European Time). Two winners will be chosen at random, and I’ll contact them next week and announce them as soon as they’ve responded.

So…I look forward to seeing your comments! Good luck!

I make bentos for myself, but my roommate and longtime friend is also a bentoist. We pack our own lunches, but frequently make tons of johbisai that we share. For example, she'll make and freeze pre-portioned rice, and I'll make soboro and stick it in the the fridge.
I love your recipes and bentos, so feel free to keep on doing what you do! I don't think you have featured bentos using your marinated boiled egg recipes (e.g. miso eggs, lazy easy tea eggs). I would like to see how you compliment the flavors and put them in a box. I am also curious to see more bread-based but non-sandwich bentos (like Bento 24 before it's constructed).

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I just got my own copy yesterday in the mail! I would LOVE to have another (many more?) to give as gifts and having a signed one will be a special present to myself ... I'll give away the one I got from TheBookDepository ... lol.

I am 53, a programmer, and make bentos for my family and whoever else I can offer them to. I'm a long-time home cook. My rule is "nothing from a package." This doesn't exactly apply to foreign cuisine cooking for things like nori, etc., but basically I just use fresh, local and always start from scratch.

This past year my husband got back into auto racing seriously, so I was challenged by what to eat every single week from April to September that we could take to the racetrack (12 hours 3x/week). Bentos were my answer. I'm not good at it yet, but I'm sure enjoying myself.

One of my sons spent a year in Japan as an exchange student 10 years ago. ever since then I've been interested in cooking Japanese, but a big hole in my repertoire has been the tiny little salad side dishes. Your cookbook/website has tons of these and I LOVE them! you know ... the sprouts w/sweet pepper quick stirfry, or julienned raw potatoes with a bit of sesame oil, etc.

Anyway ... hang in there through your health challenges and thanks thanks thanks for all the work you do.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello Maki, I am 30, I live in Canada now, but I immigrated from the US last year. I do general administrative office-y work. I make bentos for myself and my husband (we switch off lunch duties). I have really enjoyed both this website and just hungry. My husband's family is of Japanese decent (his mother's immigrated from Kyushu), and when I made your chicken tsukune recipe, he told me it was like eating at his aunts house when he was kid.

So thank you for that and I hope you feel much better soon!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I live in Florida.

I am 24, a stay at home mom and female.

I make bentos mostly for my husband.

Hi
I'm a 25 yr old female. I live in Austin Texas. I work for a non profit as an accountant. I started making bentos just for me; but after showing them to my family, friends, and coworkers they have started to request some bentos for special ocassions.

Thanks

Love a giveaway! I'm a 32 year old engineer living in Colorado, USA. I make bentos for myself and occasionally for my husband (when he's not traveling or going out for lunch with his buddies).

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

You're ever so generous oh Big Onigiri! Congrats with the second edition of your book!

I'm from Utrecht, Netherlands, and make bentos for myself -- or for me and my 'hiking pal' when I'm going for a long walk. So it's mostly office & hiking bentos and the occassional summer or holiday picnic bento.

I'm a museum employee (information specialist) and entered the big "four-O" last year :\

As I'm v-gan I especially love to see your plantbased recipes on JustBento. :) And quick tips & cutting techniques!

Hi Maki,
Long time lurker here.

I'm female, in my mid-40s, and currently I live in the USA. I used to be in health care but now I work as a freelancer in multiple fields, mostly related to people management.

I make bentos primarily for myself when I am travelling between jobs. Since I travel from place to place, it would be useful to have tips on how to make bentos when one does not have the same refrigerator/freezer every night to store bento supplies.

Happy Holidays!
Jannie

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi! I am 33 & from Texas, USA. A stay @ home mom to 3, 5, & 12 year old boys. I have been Bento-ing for about 3 years. (Your blog gave me bento fever.) I mainly make them for my husband and the 5 yo. He started his first year of school this year, so it has been fun to see his bento boxes come back empty!!! I will make them cute bento until they tell me "STOP" ᵔ⩊ᵔ My husbands bentos are usually from leftovers. So I really like seeing leftover ideas! Thanks!!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi there!

I'm a twenty-nine year old stay-at-home mom to a 2 months old baby in New York.

I would love to learn to make bentos, so I can make some for my baby (when he starts eating solids) and myself. I've always been interested on the Japanese culture and food. So, thank you for the inspiration!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Let me win thos book! I desperately need this book! My boys 10 & 8 are in competitively swimming and they train everyday from 4.30 to 7.30pm everyday. We can't afford to eat at home and so to make sure they eat healthily, I have to prepare dinner boxes to the pool for them to eat after their trainings.
I need refreshing and interesting ideas. I need help to make sure the food can be kept for at least 3 hrs before consumption.
Please consider me seriously. Thank you!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm from The United States
I'm a female college student
I make bentos mostly for myself but I would love to start making them for my friends when we go on trips together
I love to try new foods so just about anything you post makes me happy. I love the recipe section but would love to see some desert recipes because I have a bit of a sweet tooth.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 34 yr old stay at home mom in the US. I'd like to make Bentos for my husband to take to work & my son when he goes to school. I can't stand the idea of sending him away with a sandwich every day. I've been reading your blog for a while because I haven't been sure how to begin, especially since I'm not a great cook. (I am getting better though.) This book would make a wonderful reference for me.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Yay contests :D
I'm a female in my early twenties working at a company as a research scientist in Canada. I make bentos for myself when I have time, and really like looking at the pretty pictures you post on your site :) I was wondering if you've done your take on the Japanese Christmas cake that's very popularly displayed in dramas?

Thanks for posting even though things have been difficult. I hope you have a wonderful holiday and new year!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi,
I live near Waterloo, ON Canada (think RIM/Blackberry hometown). I'm female, 43 and a stay-at-home, homeschooling Mom of 3. My husband used to work for a Japanese company and travelled to Japan multiple times. We also made friends with some Japanese families who were transferred here for a few years. As a result, we've developed a love of Japanese food. I've always had a thing for containers and boxes, so Bento is a great combination of two things I love! I have not made many Bento yet . . . I need to get into some new routines. When I'm busy, it's easy to throw together a sandwich without thinking. Bento require significantly more mental effort since I'm not used to making them. I know it will get easier as I make more of them. My husband would like more variety in his lunches and I know Bento is the perfect way to do this! I also want to make Bento for myself and the kids for our field trips and "out of the house" days. They much prefer a "bits and pieces" style of lunch to a sandwich and Bento fits the bill. I'd love to win your cookbook! Thanks for the inspiration.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am a 25 year old, male Technical/Vocational Education Instructor from the Frozen Tundra of Minnesota, U.S.A. I was introduced to Bento by way of a good friend of mine from Korea and have since switched my diet to incorporate the limited number of ideas I have come up with into regular practice. As a note on this all, I am an avid martial artist who over the past couple of years put on a little too much winter weight (I was a portly 240lbs, @5'11"), but since I have incorporated Bento and the art of mindful meal preparation, I have lost 20lbs of flab and have been able to feel genuinely good with my workouts(not heavy or completely drained.).

I plan on continuing to learn about Bento wherever I can and share such things with my friends and training partners. I also plan on resourcing this website a lot more frequently given all of the good ideas and solid feedback from other Bento-ers.

Cheers and Keep the good Ideas coming!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Oh dear, I didn't follow directions properly the first time around!

I live in western Massachusetts. I'm a 40-something female, and I work as the managing director of a children's health and nutrition theater company. I mainly make bento for myself. Since I scour the web weekly for healthy recipes to link to from the company blog, I'm excited to see any kind of recipe that helps kids *and* adults eat more fruits and vegetables.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi,
I live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
I am Carla, female, 35. I work with IT.
I never made a bento, but I love Japanese food and I think this is very interesting. I plan to do it for me and my family (my husband and in the future for my doughter that is just 8 months now).
What I would like to see is a "how to" with steps to prepare all items from a bento in parallel and assembly it, in a way that is done as fast as possible.
Thank you and congratulations for your work! :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

My daughter loves bentos & has been making them for lunch at college. This would be a great Christmas present. Thanks for all the great bento tips & suggestions.

I'm 20 yrs old.

I do mostly bentos for myself, but I would soon want to present my dad with a heavy dose of manly healthyness!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am 40 and live in Idaho. I work in a an office and often have to eat at my desk. I've only recently started making bentos. I love the fact they are healthy and the perk up my lunch, making it into something special even though it's eaten in front of a computer.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Thanks for this great giveaway!
My name is Marisol and I live in Valencia, Spain. I work as Secretary Manager for an NGO called European Network on Independent Living for disabled people all over Europe.
I usually eat at the office so I make bentos for myself and also me and my corean doramas loving friends have picnics together where we bring bentos with us!
It would be great to have this book! Fingers crossed for all!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Greetings from the Great Lakes State! I am writing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. I am a 29 year old stay-at-home father while I am looking for work.

In the New Year, I want to start making bento for my 3 year old son, Rhys, who will be going to pre-school/day care and is required to bring a boxed lunch. As we don't eat meat and dairy in the same meal, I thought Bento would be a good way to give Rhys some variety, since the school will provide milk.

I have just started to watch your blog in the past few days, but would like to see some how-tos.

Thanks for your blog, and I look forward to following it!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm retired and living in Pennsylvania USA. I am an avid gardener and just completed Master Gardener training (a volunteer organization). I have not made bentos but am dying to try. I cook for my husband and myself want to offer healthier options for us.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello! :D
My name is Amanda, I am a 19 year female old college student from Pennsylvania, USA
I love reading your site and seeing all of the beautiful bentos! I have made few myself as a busy college student but I am sure this book would give me help with my creations! I would love to make bentos to bring to school for my boyfriend and I.

Thank you for running this contest and this site! :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi :D

I'm Xena, from Canada. Female, 19, student - and will be for a while. I made some bentos for myself in highschool to bring as school lunches and picnics, but in University i've found no time to make bentos (or do anything besides studying, really... except reading blogs ofcourse!)
I'd like to see some quick bentos that can be made from basic ingredients :) And maybe something that involves sweet potatoes?

Thanks!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello! I am a Male, 28, from Joliet, Il. Right now I am between jobs. I love making Bentos for myself, and sometimes for family. Though with family I have to watch what I put in because they can be picky :P.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Location: Idaho, US
I'm a 19-year-old student whose current job is in science, and I plan to major in Marine Biology.
I make bentos for myself, though I have made them for my parents a couple times.
I actually like reading about the background info for pictures you have taken. Somehow, what you write is entertaining and very honest. I'd love to see more guest bentos.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am from India - East and South.
I am 30, male and a business consultant.
I would make bentos for myself.

What I would like to know how to do Indian style rice oriented bentos, specifically food that would work well when it is cold. Rice is big in south and east India. But Indian 'Tiffin dabbas' tend to avoid rice unless there is a microwave available for warming, or it is carried fresh, or it is in a container capable of keeping food warm.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Would love to win this!
• Live in the SF Bay Area
• Female, in the government field -- mid 30s.
• Just starting on bentos, but would love to get more creative and do bentos for my daughter when she is in school (she's barely 2 now)
• Would love to see some info on necessary tools, equipment, etc to get a beginner started, without breaking the bank!

Thanks so much!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

OH yeah, this is on my wishlist right now!

I'm a 40ish web designer/developer in the USA (Texas, more specifically). I

I found your site a year or so ago and have been making bentos for myself & my husband ever since. I love the recipes here on JustBento! I'm not sure there's much else I could ask for except to say "keep up the great work."

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Maki!

- I'm in Williamsburg, VA, USA
- I'm a 35 y.o. woman working at a university
- I make bentos for myself! It's been so much healthier (and tastier) than my usual take-out!
- I love your basic home-cook Japanese recipes--I find that mastering the basics really helps my cooking and it's nearly impossible to find "authentic" Japanese food around here, so it's good to know how to make it at home!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi I'm Julie and I love this blog!

I live in Montreal, Canada.

I'm a woman, 34, computer programmer. Except right now I have an injury so I take a bento everyday to my physiotherapy program to have a healthy lunch!
I make bentos for myself.
I like to see more of traditional Japanese bentos on this blog. :-)

Thank you.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi! I'm a librarian in the US, and I just turned 33. Oh, also female.

I make bentos for myself to take to work. I'd love to see more left-over repurposing, or how to make bentos quickly.

Thanks for the giveaway!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi!

I just stumbled across your site when looking for advice on cooking raw lotus root. I will now be a regular! And the book looks AMAZING! I cook a lot of Japanese food (have you seen this? it's amazing: http://pekopekocookbook.com/) and am always looking for new ideas....

- I am located outside of Boston, MA
- I am a girl, marketing consultant, and a proud 42-years-old
- I want to start making bentos for my 2-year-old daughter (who goes to school 3x/week but doesn't ever eat lunch there) and my 14-y-o stepdaughter, who just became a vegetarian (and I want her to try things outside of PB&J!).
- I'm new to JustBento, but my priorities will be ease of assembly, information on where to get things like the actual boxes to pack into, and recipes. Love all the pictures!

Thank you!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm in Denver, Colorado, USA
I'm a 30-something woman, government relations professional for a large hospital system
I make bentos for my 3-year-old daughter as she goes to preschool. I found traditional American lunchboxes to be so huge! She is three, not 30, and she doesn't need an entire sandwich, banana, cookies, milk box AND chips. She needs 1/4 of a sandwich, a few slices of banana, one small cookie, and three chips. Of course, I try to put more variety in her lunches, and that is where your website comes in handy!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

-I’m located in the U.S. (Midwest region) -My age bracket is between 20-30 yrs old. I’m currently unemployed and am a female. -I primarily make bentos for my bf. Sometimes for myself or another family member.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

My name is Colette, I'm 41, and I'm a native of Brooklyn, NY!

I make bentos every day for my husband and me for lunch (and dinner, in my case--I work 12-hour shifts as an ER nurse and so I eat lunch and dinner at work). We use the Zojirushi Mr. and Ms. Bentos. Mine are not as cute or design-y as those here; I do have a cute two-tier bunny bento box that I use for my stepdaughter when she's with us. I make her onigiri often--she's wanted them ever since she saw them in a Miyazaki movie. She's in high school and her friends think she's weird for not eating pizza and chicken nuggets. She loves umeboshi and dried shrimp!

I'd like to see more recipes for make-ahead freezer staples!

I love this site--you're an inspiration!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

1. I am Japanese living in the U.S.
2. I am a woman who is in her late 30's. I work as a psychotherapist.
3. I would make bento for myself and my husband.
4. My husband is Pesco-vegetarian, so it would be great to have enough recipes that do not contain meat. I would love to know how to make popular meat base Japanese dishes (e.g., curry rice, sukiyaki) well without using any meat.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am 42 years old and live in southern Oregon, USA. I started making bentos back in June when I stumbled on your site, raved to everyone about how cool bentos are, started making them in a tupperware container and a friend sent me a real bento box for my birthday. That's how a fanatic was born. I love my bento!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello!

I'm 25 and I live in New Orleans. I work for a foundation that makes grants to early childhood initiatives in mental health. I pack my lunch every day and have recently become slightly obsessed with the art of bento. Some days I also pack a bento for my boyfriend. I am vegetarian and love crunchy foods--I'd love ideas for veggie dishes that are crunchy, but not necessarily raw because I bring either a salad or raw vegetables in my lunch each day.

I really enjoy your blog and check back eagerly and often. Hoping all is well!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello!

I am a museum professional working in vancouver who is in her late twenties. I'd like to inorporate bentos into my own lunch repertoire. I would be excited to own a copy of your book.
