The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

JUST-BENTO_bookcover.jpg

The giveaway is now closed. The winners will be contacted and announced later this week. Thank you everyone for entering!

To commemorate the new edition of The Just Bento Cookbook, I’m going to give away 2 signed copies! The new edition has the exact same content as the previous edition, but just has a slightly different form factor (a wee bit smaller (but not much), and no dust jacket (but the cover is printed in full color)). I am very glad it has been reprinted again; as I mentioned before, the original publisher closed its doors in March, but the publishing rights were picked up by another division of the same parent company, Kodansha USA. So anyway, here’s your chance to get your hands on one! It’s too late to get the book to the winners before the holidays, but it should arrive in the New Year when you’re all ready to tackle those healthy/frugal eating resolutions.

All you have to do is leave a comment to this post (not an email reply if you are reading this by email: click on the title to come to site, and post your comment entry here!) Be sure to put your email address in the appropriate box (it will be hidden from prying spammers, not to worry) so that I can contact you if you win. In the body of your comment, state the following:

  • where you are located in the world (everyone is eligible, as long as you live somewhere where mail can reach you)
  • your gender, profession and general age bracket (you can be vague about the age ^_^ I’m just a curious bunny about who my readers are)
  • who you make bentos for primarily - or plan to make bentos for if you havent’ started
  • (optional) What you want to see on JustBento. A specific recipe? A how-to? I’m all ears!

Only one entry/comment per person please! The deadline for posting your comment is 23:59:59 of Monday, December 19th CET (Central European Time). Two winners will be chosen at random, and I’ll contact them next week and announce them as soon as they’ve responded.

So…I look forward to seeing your comments! Good luck!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Makiko,
I'm a 50-year-old mom in Napa, California, where we love our food and want our kids to love good food, too. I want them to stay away from lunchables at all costs!

I work as a natural resource planner and care about the environment deeply. That's another reason why bentos appeal to me - my kids don't throw away anything from their lunches. I make bentos primarily for the kids. For me, I just grab any leftovers in the fridge and stick them in a cute little lunch bag I have. I suppose since the leftovers are in little glass pyrex containers that fit neatly into my bag, I sort of have a bento for lunch, too.

I checked just bento from our library once and sent the kids packing with some of your recipes. I just bought a couple of nori punches from daiso and am looking forward to sticking some cute faces and boats on some musubi!

I'd like posts specifically for speedy kids lunches. I love your blog and wish you well! And I hope I win!

I make bentos for lunch and since a trip to Japan earlier in the year have been expanding my Japanese cooking techniques to other meals as well.

Being a vegetarian I'd like to see some vego options but really any bento is so inspirational that they are all great for ideas and tricks to try.

I've been finding interesting bentos make lunch interesting and help me to lose weight as I'm less likely to ditch my homemade lunch to go out to lunch with my workmates!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

こんにちは!

I'm from Singapore, work in a publishing firm and am 27 :)

I started on bento-making for my boyfriend when we lived in Japan, and we love that we can control what goes into our food. I haven't been making them since returning to Singapore because things are even more hectic now and I don't have the time to make bentos. (Is it odd that work life is more hectic here than in Japan?)

I hope to get back into bentos again soon and it would be excellent if there were more "super quick" recipes, but still delicious and healthy!

Location: pretty much dead center of Missouri, USA
Basics: lady law student in her mid 20s
Bento: all for me! Studying for long hours makes it really tempting to order out but a healthy bento lunch helps curb those bad impulses
Ideas: I love the vegetarian recipes; as long as it's not a strain on your health, I'd love to see more of them!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi there!
I'm 24 years old female medicine student from Poland. I cook mostly for myself, sometimes for my family. I'm a beginner in making bentos, but I hope that I'll improve my skills soon.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am a 22 years old female from Vancouver, BC. Currently, I work as an Child Care Worker.
I make bentos primarily for myself or as a thank you gift, but really I am practicing until I have children of my own. I would like to see more tips and tricks on making charabento.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Maki,
I'm from Israel. I'm female, in my thirties, and I work as a teacher and translator. I sometimes make bentos for picnics and hope to make them for my children in the future.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I live in good old California

I'm female, currently a student, and i'm 17 years old :]

I make bento's for myself, since i am a vegetarian, it's difficult for me to get a completey balanced meal, but making and eating bentos has helped me with that a lot :] i'm a lot healthier now and it's amazing :]

I would like to see how to fry tofu correctly, i've only done it right once and i have no idea how i did it haha!

Anyways, i think it's amazing that you're giving away one of your cook books!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I live in Boston in the US. I'm a female 20-something. I work as an analyst for a digital marketing company. I don't make bentos, but your blog has inspired me to start! I'm so glad that your new publisher has reprinted your book.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Makiko, I'm so glad to read from your tweets that you're slowly on the mend; i've missed your insight into the wackiness of the interface between east & west!!! I found your blog for the bento content, then found your tweet feed in the crazy aftermath of Fukashima. My military family is now back in the US, home from Japan; but we all miss Japan and hope to go back someday. I'm a 50-something lady living in Phoenix, AZ area who makes bentos for herself. I'm a dietitian by training. Take care, bunny girl!!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am located in the very lovely city of Sioux Falls, SD USA. I've had 10 21st birthdays so far :) I'm a licensed agent for a national insurance company that just got bought out so now we're in good hands. I generally make bentos for myself and my husband. My two kids are in daycare and the meals are supplied by them so I don't have to bring them lunch every day. I don't really have any specific request other than keep putting the pictures of your bentos up because they give me so many ideas on how to prepare ours. I do want to "see" you taking it easy until you are definitely up to blogging again.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I live in Oregon.

I am a 29-year-old woman, and I teach preschool. I am getting a bento box for Christmas, and am excited to enter the world of bento making.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello!

I am located in Camarillo, California -
I'm a 49 year old woman, and work in the operations department of an investment management firm.
I've never made bentos before but am very intrigued! I would love to bring something like this to work with me and I think my niece would LOVE to take a bento to school - wouldn't she be the talk of the 4th grade?!!??!

Thanks so much for the giveaway offer -

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 24 year old woman in WA state, newly moved to the west side. I primarily make bento for myself and occasionally for my boyfriend (he's pretty much a sandwich guy though). My professional bracket is such that I am one of the many fast food workers trying to move up in the world.

As for what I'd like to see, I think (definitely for the Just Hungry site) nabe dishes for these winter months would be appropriate. For the Just Bento site, more pickle recipes would be interesting. You are my "go-to" resource for these kind of things, so I leave myself in your capable hands.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello there! I'm 18 and I live in Brazil (not on the shore, though- no beach for me ):). I'm a girl and have just entered university.
I have always loved the japanese culture and, basically, everything that has to do with Japan. When I found out about bento, I decided to give it a try- and fell in love. Mostly, I cook for myself and then take my bento to school, which saves me a lot of money.
I was very sad when I heard the news about your health, and I'm rooting for your recovery. That would be the one thing I would like to see on Justbento.
That and salmon recipes :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello! ^-^
I'm from Arizona,USA
I'm a female and does student count as an occupation? Well I don't really have an offical job but I do help my parents with their work. I'm 14 right now.
I usually make bentos for myself for school as long as I wake up early enough.
Get well soon Maki! No one wants you to be sick again ^-^.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm from Southern California (LA to be exact), female, 24, and about to go back to school. I'll be making bento's for myself, especially when school starts.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Yay, new edition! :) I'm a 41-year-old female in San Francisco, I work in a Contracting/Finance department, and I make bentos for myself. My DH is mystified by all my bento boxes, lol, but I enjoy a pretty meal and eating bentos helps me eat a more varied lunch. On Just Bento I'd just like to continue seeing more bento photos and recipes!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Maki-san,

I am a 25 y.o student in Singapore, and I have been reading your blog since I stumbled upon your blog during my bento making search few years back.

I primarily made bento for my own consumption and glee, in order to satiate my need for all things kawaii and healthy, which one of the thing that made me attracted to bento making in the first place, since I am quite conscious about healthy food, yet being cash strapped students, I am unfortunately forced to eat unhealthy fast food. Luckily I found bento, and most importantly I found Just Bento & Just Hungry.

Once in a while, during my rare time where I cooked for my friends, I love to use your recipes since the ingredients are usually affordable and doesn't require much time preparation ^^

Last but not least, I know you always wrote about bento which could help people to lose weight, I would definitely loooove it if you could help us, the people at the other end of the spectrum, those who wanted to gain weight, high-calorie-laden bentos... So far it is been quite a challenge to find the recipes that address this, since most high-calorie food are inclined to be western style food (cake, cheese, dairy foods), which can be quite expensive material wise in Singapore & time consuming to made, as opposed to "slimming" Asian food...

Thanks for reading to my long comment/essay ^^; please keep up the good work~ !

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

28 year old male from just outside London, England.

I've followed the blog for a while, but not got round to making many of the bentos yet. I've been bodybuilding for a few months, and intend to start using bentos when I begin 'cutting' my body fat. They seem like a great way to count my intake while remaining varied and healthy.

Love the blog, the pics are appetising and give me some enthusiasm for when I start. I'm 'bulking' right now, so bentos don't fit my goals just yet but I can't wait to try.

Good luck with the book, I hope you have much success with it.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am 50 something currently living in Piscataway, NJ and I am a supervisor in a manufacturing plant.

I work night shift and there is no all night eating place open so I have to bring lunch everyday.

I make bentos for myself - Catered for many years and did a lot of box lunches - bentos are a cuter version of a box lunch. I also love getting a healthy meal. ( Lost 75 lbs in the last 13 months and being mindful of what I ate whn not at home was a key to my sucess.)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi! I'm in the northeastern USA, in my late twenties, and a female graduate student. I make my lunches to eat for myself, but I like to share them with the rest of the world online, too, so maybe it's not entirely for myself. I'm always looking for simple ideas that are appropriate for adults. Can you tell me what else to do with duck? I have this five pound duck in my freezer I'm half afraid of right now.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am from California. I'm 29 and male, and I work as a software engineer. I haven't really made bentos, but I would like to for myself someday soon, and I have fond memories of my mother making them for me when I was younger. I love desserts, so it'd be really nice to see some bento dessert recipes!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I live in Seattle, washington in the U.S. I am a 23 year old female and work at Kinokuniya bookstore and go to school for Elementary Education. I want to become vegan and making your own food is a requirement so if I won these books it would be mostly to help myself stay healthy.
If I would like to see anything new on your blog it would definetly be more vegitarian and vegan options!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm in the desert in california (west coast US), but I grew up in San Fransisco.
I'm mid 30's work from home, I make bentos for 3-5 people a day, our son has celiac's disease, and bentos allow him to have a fun lunch without focusing on the foods he can not eat.
What I would like to see: For the holiday I have a large family sized multi tray box my husband picked out, I could use ideas on how to pack a picnic box.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Yes! Gettint this book would be such a great Christmas present! ;)

I'm come from the Basque Country and I'm a 24 year old basque teacher!
I've been visiting your webpage for a year or so and I even got a Bento box! I've been planning to cook healthy meals for myself to have them at work, but I first came looking for Japanese recipes! (Karaage, and so!) I just love Japanese cuisine and culture, but haven't been able to find some ingredients so far (mirin, for example).

I just want to say thank you for everything you post! It's so great to have someone explain all this stuff to us, outsiders! :P

Keep rocking, Maki! ;)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm so happy the book is being re-released!

I'm a 30 year old wife and mother to a beautiful 5 year old girl and I live in Columbus, Ohio. I'm a returning college student and work for the physics demonstration department at the nearby university. I make bento for all three of us and turn to your blog and recipes frequently for tasty, healthy ideas for our lunches. Thank you so much for the time, knowledge, and care you give to your blog as well as all your readers.

What would I like to see? Just more of the quality content you bring to your site, I'm always surprised and pleased with everything ^_^

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello there,
Who am I? I'm a 60 y/o soon to be retired customer service rep living in southeast USA. After a nasty divorce, I quit cooking. After too much googling, I found your web site. Now I'm not making pretty bentos, but lots of pracitcal ones for my lunch on a daily basis. Although I don't put the items in a bento box, I'm usually eating a "bento box" for my evening meal as well. Love the portion control.
I enjoy trying a new recipe from your site several times a month. Can't even begin to say thank you enough for your inspiration, & motivation to us all through your web site. Biggest compliment to me - and the thanks goes to you - cashier at Asian market asked if I had lived in Japan or Korea, he said I bought lots of things his wife buys.
I already have your book. I just wanted to share in letting you know who we - your readers are! Also to say, I add my wishes for your good health. Please continue the delightful aritcles and amazing recipes.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am a thirty year old female from the United States. I am new to making bento lunches and plan to make it for myself. I would really love to see a "how to" guide, and plan to follow your posts. I really hope I win. Thank you.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

*cheering for the givaway* :D

I'm from the Netherlands (specifically Maastricht), and currently 23 years old. At the moment I'm busy medschool, which I've got about 6 months left of. During my internships (which last for the final 3 years of medschool in the Netherlands) I started making Bentos as lunch for myself, since I noticed I was starting to eat less and less healthily in the hospital cafetarias. Although I will admit I sometimes have motivational problems with waking up in time to prepare a bento, it really helps me to watch what I eat :) Even if I can't afford electrical appliances that would probably make the whole process a lot easier.
As for requests I really don't have any.... I haven't even tried all the recipes on the site as it is :) although I would love to know how I could (attempt) to make fresh mochi without a kitchenaid (seeing as they're expensive), if it is at all possible in a normal kitchen setting...

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm in New Brunswick, Canada; I'm female, an archivist, 32 years old. I don't have too many opportunities to make bentos, since my husband and I both work close enough to home to come home for lunch most days; but I do make them for us when we can't come home. I'd love to see more charaben - I'm no artist but love the inspiration!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm hoping that your book shows up for me under our Christmas tree. If it does and I win I'll super excited to pass it along to a friend who has only recently started bento!

I'm a 33yo female retail manager (and mom!) from Bloomington, Indiana, USA. I make bento for my son and myself. His are always cuter and more fun than mine but we both "do" bento for lunch!

I've been a fan of the site for years and you've covered SOOOO much! I do agree with Noel up above about more re-purposed left overs. I think I'd also like a peak into your grocery basket.... how much broccoli do you buy to ensure you use it all up in time? Also, how you decide what dishes go well together in a box.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi my name is Noah, I'm a lawyer in Seattle WA. Would love to use your book to cook more diverse recipes for my family. 31 years old!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

OH BOY, free books! I read cookbooks like they were novels!

I live in Northern Virginia now, but I've lived all over, as a military wife.
I am female, a Spanish teacher in an IB middle school, and fast closing on 60 (Next year of the Dragon!).
I make bento for myself, my husband and my son, but not frequently. I'm always looking for new ideas that are fun and filling, and not too time consuming. Since I lived in Okinawa, I'd love to see regional Japanese recipes, and Korean recipes. While I love to look at cute bento, for the fun of it, I'm more interested in daily type foods.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi,
Greetings from Sarawak Malaysia. I'm 57 years old and I work as a teacher in a local primary school here.

I loved Japanese cuisine for a while now but bento boxes is quite new for me and i find it delicious and healthy for those who want to control diet! I started to love it after seeing my daughter reading your blog. and now i started to make bento for her to bring to work.

thank you for sharing such a nice blog and keep up the good work!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

where you are located in the world: US, North Carolina
your gender, profession and general age bracket: Female, fundraiser in my 40's

I am new to this so any information helps me

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi!
I'm in the U.S. I'm a stay-at-home mom of a three year old boy. I'm in my 40s. I'm planning to make bentos for my son because I hope it will help motivate him to try more kinds of food. Plus, bento making just seems like a lot of fun. :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am a 30-something single mom in the FL panhandle who recently went back to school to pursue my Masters/PhD in English. Last semester was a bit of a nightmare, meal-wise, as I taught in the mornings and took classes at night. I have been trying to come up with a healthier, perhaps more fun, eating plan for my 10-year-old daughter for next term, and the whole bento philosophy seems to fit the bill. I stumbled onto your site quite by accident, and I like how practical your recipes and tips are. Charaben is certainly cute (and there is no end to the websites that feature them), but you appear to prioritize ease and nutrition. I could do that kind of bento!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'd love to win your cookbook!

I'm a 30 year old statistician living in Washington, DC. I've been trying to pack lunches for work more often (to save money), and I really like bento boxes because of their compactness - I commute by bike a few times a week, and it's hard to get all my clothes AND my lunch into my little bike bags.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I am a 25 year old woman from Washington state in the USA. I am currently looking to change careers and am anticipating a very busy new lifestyle that will require me to make and take lunch to work every day. I would love to have your book to inspire me with new, healthy, packable meals! I would love to see a bento recipe featuring red garnet yams!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm from the UK but in the middle of a three year stint in NYC for my husband's job. I'm currently a stay at home mum with a three month old baby. Before we moved here I was a graduate student in philosophy (I got my PhD just before we moved over here) and a library assistant. I'm in my early 30s.

I make bentos primarily for my husband but also for myself sometimes. Before the baby arrived I used to make them for my self more often, especially when I was working. I hope I'll be making them for the little one too once he's moved on to proper food and not just milk.

There's nothing in particular that I'd like to see, just keep up the good work!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a girl from the deep south of Georgia! I'm 18 and I'm working torwards making money to get into college. I want to take fine arts and education. I want to become an art teacher! Its always been my passion.
I've been a fan of Japan and food for a loooonnngg time. And when I found bento I knew this is what I was looking for! I was so confused at first of what to do.no idea how to even start! Then I found your site.
Everything I needed to know. In. One. Place.
Because of your recipes I lost 20 pounds!
Now I show my bentos to everyone I know! I've even taught some of my friends about bento and how to cook them!
I have to admit my favorite bento was the sandwich shaped like a fish. Childish yes but I just thought it was so whimsical!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi, Well I'm a 24 years old Female college student in Puerto Rico. I'm studying Linguistics and History of Asian Cultures. For about a year or so now I've been looking for healthier ways to eat and diet and your sites has helped me greatly. Hope you are feeling better soon
Merry Christmas

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a female early-30s grad student in Michigan who makes bento mostly for myself, but occasionally to share with friends when we declare a mental health day and skip school in favor of thoroughly non-academic fun. And honestly, what I enjoy the most on Just Bento are the more home-cooking style Japanese foods - either specific recipes or just general ideas and suggestions and tips etc. Those are what I miss most from when I lived in Japan, and those are the hardest to get information/ideas about.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello!

I'm Tara, and I live in England! I'm a female student, and I'm 21 years old. I primarily make bento for myself, mainly on days/evenings when I'm going to be in Uni for a long stretch, and I do it because it's a good way to use leftovers, and it makes for an interesting meal.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Hi!! I am a Singaporean girl living alone in Perth. I am a recent graduate (meaning that I'm technically jobless) and is turning 23 tomorrow :P !!!

Living by myself on a budget means I have to prepare food at home most of the time and this site was actually the one that taught me how to cook most of the stuff a few years back. So I mainly make bento for myself or some for some really close friends.

As for what I would like to see... Perhaps a how-to prepare food with the most limited equipments (such as only a microwave and a small hot stove). A friend of mine is living in America and his housing does not allow any well... cooking stuff cause they provide food. Unfortunately, during holidays, he is stuck with eating out.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi there,

I'm a 19 year old writer, crafter and cook from England, UK.

I make bentos for my husband and I.
I plan to also instruct others on how to create Japanese meals/ bentos and think your book would give me more ideas on how to do this properly.
