The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

JUST-BENTO_bookcover.jpg

The giveaway is now closed. The winners will be contacted and announced later this week. Thank you everyone for entering!

To commemorate the new edition of The Just Bento Cookbook, I’m going to give away 2 signed copies! The new edition has the exact same content as the previous edition, but just has a slightly different form factor (a wee bit smaller (but not much), and no dust jacket (but the cover is printed in full color)). I am very glad it has been reprinted again; as I mentioned before, the original publisher closed its doors in March, but the publishing rights were picked up by another division of the same parent company, Kodansha USA. So anyway, here’s your chance to get your hands on one! It’s too late to get the book to the winners before the holidays, but it should arrive in the New Year when you’re all ready to tackle those healthy/frugal eating resolutions.

All you have to do is leave a comment to this post (not an email reply if you are reading this by email: click on the title to come to site, and post your comment entry here!) Be sure to put your email address in the appropriate box (it will be hidden from prying spammers, not to worry) so that I can contact you if you win. In the body of your comment, state the following:

  • where you are located in the world (everyone is eligible, as long as you live somewhere where mail can reach you)
  • your gender, profession and general age bracket (you can be vague about the age ^_^ I’m just a curious bunny about who my readers are)
  • who you make bentos for primarily - or plan to make bentos for if you havent’ started
  • (optional) What you want to see on JustBento. A specific recipe? A how-to? I’m all ears!

Only one entry/comment per person please! The deadline for posting your comment is 23:59:59 of Monday, December 19th CET (Central European Time). Two winners will be chosen at random, and I’ll contact them next week and announce them as soon as they’ve responded.

So…I look forward to seeing your comments! Good luck!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 47 year old male teacher from Oklahoma that finds bento lunches (and dinners!) a fabulous healthy alternative to fast food! I have been looking for a copy of this book for about 4 months and I'm expecting my copy to arrive from Amazon this week, but I would love to get an autographed copy, allowing me to give my unautographed copy to my 23 year old daughter. :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

That looks gorgeous!!! I am 35 & live outside Chicago. I've lived in Japan off and on for three years total. I love to cook, and I love to eat bento, but I haven't made my own much. I'd live to start, to eat healthier lunches!!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a female reader in my mid-30s from Nova Scotia. ^_^ I adapt manga and transcribe politicians, and I haven't really made bentos yet, but when I do, it'll mainly be for me and my husband. (And I have to admit he'll be the one doing most of the cooking--he cooks, I bake.)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello I am from the USA. I am 17 and looking for a job. I love Japan and anime and the pop culture in general. I am wanting to learn to cook for myself and friends.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

-gaijin in Japan (live in Takarazuka/work in Nishinomiya), just moved here in August (from Los Angeles)
-classical musician, female, 29
-I make bentos for myself. I actually started back in LA after discovering your site, and now I want to make them to take with me to work.
-I'm trying to return to my South Beach diet, which was really effective (lost 17 lbs. from April to August) but then I moved and it's been impossible to follow in Japan because of all the unavoidable carbs when I eat out. Substituting brown rice in my bentos gets a bit old, so I would love to see some more bento suggestions that would help me cut down on the carbs in general.

I love your recipes! Thanks so much for a great website and a great book!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

uwaaaaaah!~! how awesome! i've only just found this place and i get a chance to obtain such an awesome looking book! *excited* i've read through all 73 pages of this site like, three times already and im still wanting more :3

I live in the south western corner of Australia, Surrounded by orchids and green hills in a tiny apple growing community :P
I just turned 20, am Female, and i work in a large farmers market (selling fruit and veg) As well as studying Art and contemporary Crafts, and my side job/hobby of Photography :)
Mostly i try to make things for my mother and i, but she doesn't like my Asian creations very much hehe. i dont have a very outstanding knowledge of cooking, but i love to do it, and i tend to find myself daydreaming about making picnic bentos for my friends on an outing somewhere!
i've always love how benots looked (comes with my japan obsession, haha) and i've now decided that i'd like to make them a big part of day to day life, and am having fun choosing a cute bento box to start out with :3

well, what i want to see? MORE! haha :)
aside from that, maybe some recopies that wont bloat you up during the day maybe? as in, some light filling things, but things that will still give you lots of energy to work through the day. or some fresh feeling bentos? that leave you with a nice fresh breath, i have to talk to people all day, and sometimes with certain lunches, you tend to feel a bit paranoid about the "lunchtime" breath haha^_^
how about some of your favorite sites for utensils and accessories, and maybe a bento utensil "how to" guide? im quite interested on how to make and use egg rolls...even though i cant eat them ^.^
id also love to see more traditional and unusual dishes from japan. can never get enough information for my mind to be satisfied ;)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

The website is great. I have made a few bentos. Spam musubi and rice with homemade ?furikaki?
I am a 40ish woman in Idaho, USA. My work is in CADD.
I would like more recipes that can sit unrefridgerated till lunch time.

I'm vegetarian, so more meat free recipes are always welcome! :D

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello! I am located in Boulder, CO. I am a 22 year old woman, and right now I'm a student. It is my dream to teach high school English, but right now I'm putting that dream on hold and getting my English and Japanese double major degree, to go teach English in Japan for a few years and maybe do some translation work afterwards while I get my teaching degree later. I'm still trying to work bentos into my everyday routine. I need to work on my organization. But once I get it down, I'll just be making bentos for me and my boyfriend. It's hard to think of anything JustBento needs that it doesn't already have. Maybe it would be fun to do an around-the-world bento once in a while--like a series that focuses on recipes from different places in the world, just to show how diverse bentos can be and how universal. Or something. But generally I think the site it perfect, and very well-rounded in every sense of the word.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Maki, I have been reading your blog and recipes and LURVVE all your recipes. I can never get enough of good japanese homestyle food. I am in my late 30s, female with 2 sons who love japanese food and am an accountant.
More good-ol' japanese home cooking (What you eat at home) recipes please :) :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Maki hope you 're recovering fast.

I'm a 27 year old Turkish girl and I work as an engineer.

I cant say I do bentos but tried to make a few of your recipes. Must say most of the ingredients are really really hard to find for me.
A signed copy of your book would be fantastic for me.
Thanks a bunch.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hihi~. I go by Pixie, and I'm a female, 21 year old college student (I hope to be a library assistant!) from the eastern US.

I don't make a lot of bento, but I really want to start doing it regularly for myself to take to work! That's why I popped back into the site, actually. I want to gather recipes and get cooking this week so that I can have a bento to take on Christmas Eve. That will be a long, arduous day (I work in a toy store), and I want good food to eat at least. xD

As for what I'd like to see, hmm... maybe more recipes that feature cabbage as the primary ingredient. I love cabbage so much.

Food. An embodiment of love.

Greetings from Manila!

I'm 24 years old, female, and working as an occupational therapist (作業療法士). For many years I have always been interested in Japanese cuisine, and had followed your entries (JustBento and JustHungry) since 2009. I usually prepare bento items ahead, as I tend to work long hours during the day.. and share them with my colleagues. At times I'd cook for my family (some of them are vegan), and let them munch on the leftovers.. if there are any left. :)

I'd like to learn more recipes that use miso (more of the white-colored miso), or noodles (i.e. soba or udon).

Cheers!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I live in the South of France, I am a woman of 31 years, and am currently on parental leave.

I love making bentos for fun, before it was mostly to eat at my place of work, a nice way to decorate the remains of the fridge but not that.
I am also for a picnic or going out of my children.
Most of the time I made up within the feeling.

I would love to see one day Justbento French.

Thank you very much for this giveaway.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm Felicity, female, 33 and live in Brisbane Australia. I work as a professional in the mining industry. I love the idea of Bento and can go for a couple of weeks of making lovely ones and then I just seem to lose motivation or run out of ideas. This book would be a massive help :)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 25 year old female (unemployed) student from Michigan, USA. I've wanted to make bentos for my boyfriend for work since grabbing stuff that can just be thrown in the employee's microwave isn't the healthiest options for lunch or dinner. I've also wanted to make them for my little girl as a way to get her to try new and healthier foods. ^^;

I'm a 36 year old female, who is an application support tech for a web program that is designed to improve the quality of care for mental health patients (which also has cost saving benefits for the state). Pretty much my job is to filter the calls from the help desk to the programmers.
Bentos are primarily for me, but my fiance is interested in them as well.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Maki,

I'm Monika, age 38, living in Łódź/Poland.
I work as project manager, usually long hours in the office, so I make my daily bento box to keep myself happy through the day, and healthy, too (cafeteria food is awful!).
I'm vegetarian, hence I look forward to see more "green" bentos on your site.

Happy Holidays!
Monika

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Wow, so many people...

I'm a cognitive science student from Germany(21) but currently studying at Osaka University for one semester. I love Japan (especially the macha!) but the variety of vegetarian food/bentos offered at the cafeteria or at convenience stores is very limited. Therefore, I decided to make my own bentos with your various vegetarian recepies. Today, I'll try the Vegan Dry Curry of Bento 34. I'll try to make all vegetarian Bentos from your list until I leave Japan in April. So far, I'm very satisfied with your recipes and don't have any suggestions... sorry ;-)

Keep up the awesome work and enjoy your earned and (hopefully) relaxing holidays!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hello! Maki^^
I like reading your blog, about recipe, about you arranging bento for the meal. That's just great! Also I read Just Hungry, I like the photos you upload and the stories also.
I'm 11 years old, female, attend Junior High School
I often make bento at schooldays, I usually make it with my sister, we love to experiment new bento items in the lunchboxes.
What I like to see more in JustBento is that more recipes, more tips and maybe about your life too^^
Take care ;)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I fell in love with bento on two visits to Japan. I subsequently bought a bento box and have been using it to carry leftovers to work. I'd like to be able to make my lunches more authentically Japanese so your book would be perfect!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm 17 years old in high school living in Georgia. i make bentos for myself since our school lunches are super unhealthy. I would like to see more how-to's on this site since I've loved your other ones.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 30-year old accountancy author in London. I'm originally from Taiwan but I've lived in England for 16 years, since I came for secondary school.

For the last month I've been very happily making bentos for myself and for my Frenchie husband. It started as a way for me to control my calorie intake, while still enjoying satisfying and visually pleasing meals. Now it's taken over a bit more of my life: I take photos of the bentos I make, and whenever I needed cheering up I simply come to this site, or look at my bento photos! My husband loves the food too, and has been revelling in the jealous looks from his colleagues =)

My favourite recipes here are the simple-to-make side dishes (such as the pepper and carrot confettis) and the furikakes, which really liven up a meal. I also love your always-moist poached chicken, and today my stomach is very happy about the winter vegetable stew (which I will make for my French in-laws and Indian friends over Christmas).

I love it that you take traditionally inspired food, and adapt it so effectively for those of us who don't have ready access to Japanese ingredients/ cooking equipment.

Thank you for your beautiful site =))

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi,
I'm female, 27, I'm from Italy but I currently live in Germany. I pack lunch for me and my boyfriend more or less every day, but I am just starting to look into preparing bento instead of just plopping whatever is left from dinner into lunchboxes... it looks way nicer, and possibly healthier =)

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Male, 31 - Computer Engineer from Orlando, FL

Primarily I make Bentos for myself but will be working on my daughter's lunches now that she is starting school. I love the Bento concept and the recipes that you post and can't wait to see more.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Aloha! Yes from Honolulu, HI. I'm 41 years old and my profession used to be of travel and tour(for a Japanese company) but shifted to cooking as my career. I'm now a sou-chef/chef for a wine bar cooking Italian and French based cuisines. I started off as a Okinawan then Japanese and finally an Izakaya cook.

I make bentos for my coworkers and good friends. My bento meal plans are weekly to take to work as I can't eat the heavy stuffs we make at the wine bar.

I'm just happy that the "bento" has caught on internationally and is and will always be a healthier alternative to a takeout or some fast food junk.

I'm here not to win the book but to praise your work in helping many to achieve a better or yet a creative way to eat healthier. Hat's of to you! I'm already on your Flckr bento group. User name: Midniteblue. I've got some of my bento's on there.

Love your work, awesome. Mahalo and Arigatou! Maki-san sugoi tomo desu! Ganbatte!

Bentos look fun, and I think it will let me experiment a bit with cooking styles, and flavors from what I grew up with.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi there!
I'm Spanish (born in a town in the north coast, but have been living in Madrid since I was 18 and love it!). I'm female, 24, and work as a community manager, that is, doing social media stuff for an advertising agency. I have been reading both your sites for several years now, and used to do bentos when I was at university- everybody always asked about my 'cute lunch box' lol. Now I work 8 to 3 and as you probably now we Spanish eat lunch late, so I have my main meals at home most days. But sometimes I miss bento-ing!
About the site, I cannot think of a topic you have not covered extensively already. I think the things that I enjoy the most are the finished bentos with the step-by-step process, and the tidbits about bento culture and Japan ^^
Cheers,
Elisa

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I would LOVE this book!
I am a 35 year old Library Technician from Toronto, and a mom to an amazing 4 and 3/4 year old boy.
I have been making fun lunch bentos for myself and my son (for school snacks! He LOVES it and they are often the centre of many school discussions at Parent Council!).
I am *trying* to get my husband on board, but he's not really feeling the lunch bentos.
We take our lunch bentos to outings at the science museum or the zoo.
I'm all ears for new ideas and foods!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

YAY!!
I'm in Texas, United States.

I'm a 24 year-old woman, administative assistant and mom to a 6-month old.

I have tried off and on with bento-style lunch making but I always feel so directionless so inevitably soup goes on sale and I end up bringing cans of soup for lunch. :( I want some specific directions to work with for awhile so I can get in the habit of making fun lunches.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi, my names Jennifer. I'm 24 years old, and I live in Missouri. I'm a student studying criminal justice while working as a manager at a spa.

I was recently diagnosed with Celiac disease and its been a big change for me. I've been looking at making myself bento meals to take to work to try something a little different. Since the diet I'm on is still so new to me, I've been making a lot of the same things. I'd love to try something new.

I've actually really enjoyed what I've seen. I've missed having sandwiches, and I never thought of putting ham and cheese into a sushi roll. Very exciting!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi Maki.

I live in England. I'm female, unemployed, er twenties-ish, make bentos for myself.

No specific how tos or desires to see anything on Just bento, just happy to see posts.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I live in the United States in the great state of Texas. I am a female writer/author by inclination and Information Specialist by profession. I primarily make bentos for myself and my toddler, though they are a very Americanized version. Occasionally, I manage to talk hubby into letting me make him a salad bento.

I love to see photo ideas for bentos. Perhaps you could add ideas for children's bentos (not too cute, because I have a son).

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hey Hey. I'm from Trinidad and Tobago, in the Caribbean. I'm a female graphic designer. I'm also 22 years old and I've never made a bento before but I really want to learn more about it. I would be making the bentos primarily for myself.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

hei! winning your wonderful book right now it would be amazing!
i'm an italian girl (27 years), architect. at the moment i'm living in italy, but in January i'll move to Germany, where i'm going to live with my bf. Until now i've prepared bentos just for me: mostly italian food, but also some of your recipes, or an italian version of them ^^
but i'd love to prepare bentos also for my bf, of course! and, of course, i have to improve a lot! eheh
i would be very interested in a new post about stocking the food in refrigerator and how to cook it (or not cook it at all!) in the morning. i know, here and there you already talked about that.. but i've never tried yet ^^
thanks so much for the chance!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi, I'm from Hungary~~
I become interested in making bentos a year ago, when I entered to university. I got my first bento box soon, and with JustBento's ideas and recipes I get better and better. It's really a big help if I dont have any ideas, I even tried kyaraben, and I loved it so much.
Usually I love making bento more than eating them, I like making Japanese bentos, my fav is tori no karaage, yumm
Oh, I forgot. I'm 23 yrs old, girl, lol
I usually make bentos for myself, but sometimes I make for my mum, she really loves it:D
What I want to see more on JustBento? Definitely more how-to, and more kyaraben! :D
Thank you!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm located in Minnesota.
I'm female, a technical writer, and I'm in the 40-50 group.
I haven't made bentos, yet, but plan to make them for my boyfriend and me.
Love your site!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

I'm a 28 year old nursing assistant living in Delaware. I'd love to make the leap to actually making bento for myself and my future husband. I'd like to embarrass him a little at work, but I know he actually loves cute-looking things :) As to what I'd like to see on Just Bento... more of the same, really. I like especially hearing about traditional Japanese foods and how they've evolved over time.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi there.

I'm a 22 year old Canadian girl.

I'm currently between works, but I'm hoping to get into University doing Asian Studies and possibly Linguistics in the next couple of years.

I haven't made a bento yet, mostly because I'm sort of funny about it, and would like to get a "proper" bento box to put one into, first. When I do start, I'll be making them for me and my Fiancé, because it's so much cheaper and healthier to take a home-made lunch with you than to eat out all the time.

We're both Vegetarian, so I'd love to see more dishes made with tofu on your website, because just eating veggies isn't always the most inspiring. Or even just mentioning on the meat recipes whether it works well with tofu as a substitute.

Cheers!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hooray, I've been wanting this book for a while now!

I am a 23 year old student living in California in the U.S. I make bentos for myself for the days I go to school, and for my boyfriend so that he can have a good lunch at work. I like seeing creative veggie dishes because that's the hardest for me to be creative with; I usually just put a salad in one of our tiers (we both have three tier bento boxes).

Thank you so much for all the recipes you share!!

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hiii :D Im a 20 year old girl who is a student in NYC. I dont make bentos YET But i've wanted to for a while because I've always had this bad habit of going into what id call "starving" mode while at school. But starting next semester i'll be attending another university that is a bit more of a distance than my current one so I cant just flee to home for food.

I'd really like to see a recipe for canned salmon. Im not really sure how they came about but over the years my mom has randomly accumulated canned salmon (which is strange because neither of us have ever made anything with it before). So now it just kind of sits in our cupoard taking up space.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

My name is Steph. I'm in that thirty something age bracket. I'm a Lawyer in California and I plan on making (more) bentos for my husband. I'd love to see some nishime recipes or things I can stew in a crockpot for a while.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi!
My name is Kat and I'm from Montreal, Canada. I'm 25, female, and work as a freelance theatre technician.
I also run a side project called Fandom Fitness that promotes finding a wonderful balance between watching movies/playing videogames and living an active and healthy life! (I have a post in my blog about bentos and I recommended your site!)
I make bentos for myself as a healthy and fun alternative to cafeteria food.
Thanks for all the great tips and recipes! My favorite thing to make is onigiri with some bonito flakes inside! <3

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi,

I'm a female from Germany, will be 38 years old next month and work as an in-house graphic designer for a greeting cards company. I haven't made any bentos yet but I'm a great fan of Asian cuisine and just ordered a beautiful wooden bento box as a Christmas gift to myself from Amazon - along with your book, that's how I found out about your website!
As I'm a (fish-eating) vegetarian, I'm eager to learn more about vegetarian dishes that taste great and can be prepared quickly.

Re: The Just Bento Cookbook: New edition giveaway!

Hi! I’m a 26 year old female reader from Singapore. I was an assistant language teacher on the JET programme in a quaint little town in Kyushu for the past 3 years. Fresh out of school and clueless about cooking, it was a big culture shock for me to have to bring bentos to school every day.

Preparing bentos was stressful and I was living on lots of half-priced supermarket/konbini bentos, till I discovered JustBento and JustHungry. The beautiful pictures and simple recipes were a huge draw. The various tips and tricks such as freezing rice and making 1 egg tamagoyaki were very useful.

Besides bentos, I also learnt to make various Japanese dishes such as curry, oden, okonomiyaki from JustHungry. I was excited to find explanations about ingredients such as dashi, shoyu and mirin. These were such common ingredients that my Japanese teachers found it difficult what they were.

When I decided to try making umeshu last summer, it was here that I turned to. It has been an inspiration and faithful companion that explained many things that I didn’t know about Japanese food.

Primarily I made bentos for myself. But towards the end, I made some Singapore Chicken Rice bentos for my teachers and students. Would love to get a copy of this book and continue making bentos! :)

Just wanted to say, I've really enjoyed your sharing of Japanese food, culture and traditions and of course about your personal life too, thank you! May the new year bring you good health and please keep writing :)
